I have a 2004. I just replaced my CV axles less than a week ago and my passenger side has already popped out. I used NAPA axles. I believe it popped out when the suspension dropped far enough. I have a 3 inch OME lift. Anyone else with a 3 inch having this issue? Maybe the Napa ones are shorter than OEM? I’m not really wanting to do a diff dropped and I’ve seen people do limit straps which is an option. Let me know what you guys think.

Was it fully clipped into the diff? I’m thinking it wasn’t all the way in.

4" of lift is pushing the limits. Not surprised this happened at full droop.

Yeah I suspect it wasn't all the way in to begin with, a lot of people run Napa axles with lifts since Napa is generally considered to be the best parts store axle you can buy.

With 3" lift though you're CV angles have gotta be pretty severe, how do the boots look? I don't really advocate for diff drops, I put one in and it didn't do anything noticeable...all they really do is tilt the diff forward a tad.

Lowering the front down to about 2.5" was the best thing I did for my CVs

I missed the part about the 1" spacer on top of the 3" lift, yeah that's crazy for a 4x4...way too much for the CVs. That's probably what caused it to pop out, and it would've broken the CV eventually anyway if it didn't pop out.

OP if you want more than ~2.5" lift on a 4x4 then you need to look at a drop bracket lift, stacking lifts on a 4wd with IFS like Tacomas have is going to break things.

Just looked up my lift and saw this. The spacer makes it a 3in. So disregard what I said. Sorry.

When I first installed my lift, I put the 5100 on the wrong notch with new coils. Net me about 4". UBJ's would not have lasted long either. 0324181507.jpg

Ok that's better, 3" is still pushing it but way better than 4" lol. When I had a full 3" lift though I was going through CV boots like crazy and it didn't get better until I lowered it some.

But as for the axle popping out I'm thinking still that it wasn't fully seated in the diff or the C clip wasn't anyway.

Hmmm. You’re probably right. Time to tear back into it. Worse can scenario what are your thoughts on limit straps?

Honestly I've never heard of limit straps being used on anything other than long travel, seems odd to have to use them on a regular suspension setup. I don't think they should be necessary

I have limit straps on my rig and haven't busted a cv since putting them on. Cv's break for two reasons. One is high wheel spin shock loading. The other is a bind or lock at full droop. The cages can't take the added stress angle and break.

I sacrificed 1/2" of droop when I installed the limits. It has never stopped me from being able to do an obstacle.

As far as a CV popping out, I've never heard of that one before. OP, you sure you got the correct Cv's?

Makes sense, color me educated lol. I hadn't heard of them on mid travel before but I can see how at full droop even with mid travel they can be put under too much stress.

Not many people run them. If your not in pushing your rig in big rocks you can go forever without busting a Cv. Once you start getting into hard trails Cv's go loudly and often. What's odd is that in the group I usually wheel with, which is a pretty even split between 4runners and tacos, is that the 4runners have way more breakage in the Cv dept.

What size lift do you have? And what length straps did you go with? If you have any pictures of your setup I’d love to see it.

Yeah I've only blown one and it was just an issue of binding it up on a tight turn, pretty sure it was on its way out anyhow.

I've got my Kings set to about 2.5" in the front. My rigs a 4Runner so the rear is apples to oranges. I went with an 8" limit strap. If I remember I'll snap a couple pics tomorrow.

If you're still running a sway bar, and intend to keep running it... a lot of the talk about limiting straps is useless. The sway bar limits a lot of your down travel.
