I pull a 21 foot Tritan bass boat with my 08 6 speed v6 a couple times a week up and down marion mtn and it handles it just fine. I advise a brake controller if you’re doing a lot of it.

Sadly this isn’t a fun trip. My wife’s father had a major stroke and we have to clean his stuff out so when we can find him a bed in a nursing home up here we can move him.

Wouldn’t mind meeting some of y’all down here we will be in the same area tomorrow give me a wave if ya see me. Truck is hard to miss all white with black best top.

    It's inevitable, bad for business.

The Southern Appalachians were wide open pre-2000, just like out West. With 1000's of miles of established national forest roads.

There are a couple theories as to why sometime in the late 1990's the National Forest service began gating and shutting off access.

I have my theory which seems the most plausible.

I've gone round and round many times over the years with the Forest Service about cutting off access. They always give bullpucky excuses saying "policy" and even up until last year I was always told (for 20+ years) you couldn't even target shoot in the National Forest. I was floored to find out first hand, directly from the source last year, the new "policy" is shooting is allowed in the open National Forest. I believe the last 3 Presidential administrations were why I was always told "no shooting in the National Forest, that's why we provide shooting ranges". I always knew it was bullpucky. The forest Service knows it's not giving in much as without vehicle access it's extremely difficult to find an appropriate spot to shoot rifle where one can transport guns/ammo/gear to by hand.

There is no true offroading/overlanding in the Southern Appalachians on public land. The few through roads (i.e. Hurricane Creek) which are still open are only because of the need for access to multiple personal properties via the roads. I know of National Forest roads that are gated and locked that has only one resident requiring access so they just give them a key.

I gave up long ago on the idea of being able to use public land in my backyard.

Anyone looking for a free OEM roof rack for a double cab? I hate the way it looks on my truck and want it gone. I'll do a straight trade for the set of the factory roof moldings if they're in good shape.

We had dinner at Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack tonight and you would have thought it was a Toyota meet. 4 Tacoma’s and 5 4Runners chicken was great!

If you get chance, visit Juicy Lucy's on 25 in Asheville. They have great burgers!

I just drove past it this morning when we left biscuit head and I made a wrong turn. If you ever get to Sierra Nevada try the chicken wings

I had half a mind to drive back down there just for the weekend to help my mom out with a few issues. I've been back here less than a week and already miss the mountains.

How long does it take you to get here? After this trip we will likely not be back but we live in the mtns anyway

From Virginia Beach it's between 420 and 440 miles depending on which route we take. 6.5 to 7 hours depending on how fast I can drive.

Just FYI. if there is still construction on I-85, I know a really nice way around it that takes you to I-95.
