What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

I assume your gonna do a youtube video on it cuz I'm wanna clean up & fluid film my frame this summer. Ain't ever been done...

Awesome! Are you gonna do a cleaning video too? I have very minor surface rust around the welds here & there. I wanna get that off, repaint & protect the frame to help preserve it for as long as in can.

 

A lot of how you do it is based on which style grill your running too...

 

Used a quarter of a can, second application since I’ve cut and welded new parts to the frame. It goes a long way when it’s spread

Brian there are differences in the POR15. Hell you can even get some colors now I believe. It is not designed to be a top coat like undercoating or even fluid film which is simply temporary. Standard POR15 has to be used in places where it gets no sunshine as it has no UV protection and within a few months of exposure it will crack up, turn chalky, and begin to fall off. They make a POR with UV protection you just need to make sure you get the right one. The product is designed to do exactly what it says. Wire brush the roughest of the rust to get rid of loose material and brush the POR over top of it. It kills the rust and creates a hard surface. Under the truck should be fine as it gets no sun. Unless you plan on stripping the whole frame with an abrasive disk to promote adhesion and then coating it I would simply clean the rust areas and use it there. Paint the frame with chassis paint or hell even spray paint where it's not rusted. Just my 2 cents take it for what it is worth

 

Purchase POR15 in small quantities, on a as needed basis. The can top will get cruded up (destroyed) quickly. The solvent helps extend the shelf life.

 

Keep the top of the can "ring" and the lid clean. Put some saran wrap between the 2 when you close it and store it in the fridge. It will keep for a long time. We have used this a lot in industrial applications and it is expensive. we had to find way to store it. They had me chip off the rust and old paint on 2 flat bed trucks one time and roll regular POR on them 2 coates, expensive, and only lasted about 6 months because we didn't know the difference about the UV protection

Swapped out my TRD Pro wheels for some SCS wheels stealth 6 paired with BFG KM3’s. Got some work done, laying mulch down. Washed the truck, finally got rid of my crap radio and installed the Alpine iLX-107. Really enjoying the Apple CarPlay. Now I need to finish installing my rear bumper tire rack.







Here’s the rear bumper before the tire rack is installed, I’ll post after shots. Shout out to @traxman25 for the solid well built bumper.

Jon just scuff over them with either a wire brush on a drill and or hit it with some 80 grit sand paper then a little etching primer and paint done deal

As someone who has used POR in a multitude of projects, I’d totally agree.

I’d personally never hit my entire frame with it but I’d just focus on rusted areas, and topcoat per the instructions. I wouldn’t put it over light surface rust either. I’d wire wheel and rattle can then follow up with fluid film or something.

It will have tendency to straight up peel off if proper prep isn’t done or it’s put over smooth, unrusted frame that still has intact coating.

 

No need to over complicate things. Preventative maintenance is important but use the KISS method. Keep It Simple Stupid it is what I tell myself all the time
