Talk me out of getting a Canyon

Definitely don't doubt your experience, but my friends have diesels, owned them for years and really like them, and they would buy them again.

 

OP - Remember the Canyon's grandpa is the S-10. Go drive an S-10 and see how well they age.
I'd put my beat up 1st gen against a similar S-10 any day.

They should be a big boy enough to make up their own mind. Maybe they can have a celebration dinner at Applebee's after they get rooted at the dealer, because they got 0% financing and can't read fine print or do basic math

 

My father has a Canyon Denali and he has no complaints. I would be driving one or a Colorado if I could’ve gotten a better deal.

They are different trucks though, a tacoma is more utilitarian and is much better suited for off-road use. If you only need a truck for the bed and occasional 4x4(snow, forest trails, beach, etc) then a canyon would be perfect. But if you want to mod anything, do any type of moderate off-roading or like the looks of a Tacoma, then that’s the way to go.

 

I love my diesel. I loved diesels better before 2007. Despite my love of diesels, I know what they are and what they are not.

They are:
- powerful
- excellent tools for towing and hauling

They are not:
- economical
- easy to maintain
- commute friendly
- cheap to maintain

They once were:
- a little easier to maintain
- more commute friendly

The cummins and the big duramax are excellent motors saddled with quirky and expensive emissions systems. Ford has not made a decent diesel since the 7.3. The small vm motori diesels in the baby max and the ecodiesel are hot messes. We had a baby max in the canyon/Colorado and it was hands down one of the worst vehicle experiences I’ve ever had. GM should be ashamed to have put it on the market.

If I did not have a fifth wheel and did not need a diesel got work, I would not own one. I cannot recommend one to anyone unless they have a specific need for one. The modern ones have Too many headaches and high operating costs.

Why does everyone always pull the 7.3 PS out of their ass when talking about diesels? At this point the trucks they're in are roached, it was slow as fuck when it was new and just leaks so much oil that even English car owners would blush.

 

Or if you just want to mall crawl. Tacoma for the win.

Should tell you how shitty Fords diesels have been since then if the 7.3 is recalled with such love. Guess it’s the same reason people revere the old 22R even though that engine was a major dog.

The revered 12v cummins was slow as fuck as well.

My 2001 7.3 went for 300k. If ford could build a decent tranny I would have kept it longer.

 

Diesels make great work trucks, not so sure about them being daily drivers for no resson. If you're making money with the truck, the repairs needed to keep it going are more justifiable.

 

All of the current offerings are pretty good.

I really wanted a ZR2 Duramax, but their regen and emissions stuff scared me. Some guys didn't even make it home from their dealership without going into limp mode and needing to be towed back to the dealership for an emissions computer reflash. During regen mode, fuel mileage and performance drops significantly.

The GM V6s drive nice. There are a few transmission complaints, mostly with the 8 speed. I don't have any complaints after test driving a few 6 and 8 speeds. The overall truck feels really cheap and basic, unless you get yourself into a ZR2 or a higher trimmed Z71.

The Ranger wasn't available in the states when I purchased my Tacoma. It looks like a great option, but the longevity of a turbo gas engine is the biggest unknown.

I like my Tacoma and I don't have any complaints.

 

How about a Sprinter Diesel for the win....

I think I would rock this for sure.... Great for the mall and the 4x4 trails; I mean pot holed roads around here

I think the Canyons/Colorados are nice-looking trucks but the interior reminds me of an old minivan. I can't imagine what it would look like after a few years of wear and tear. But the main dealbreaker is GM's suspect quality and reliability.

 

The twins are only a consideration with the diesel. I strongly considered one to begin with and again thought about trading for one. But, outside of the engine I felt it was lesser of a truck. Better resale on the Tacoma. People say resale doesn't matter but it does. Regardless of whether or not you plan to keep the vehicle, shit happens. Accidents, thefts, etc. Having better resale puts you in a much better situation when those things happen. I would have lost 10K on my last car when it was t-boned and insurance screwed me if it weren't for the resale.

 

Underpowered with a horrible 5 speed auto and a part time awd system that you have to completely stop to engage (and hope you can get it engaged) just to get stuck in 2” of snow because one rear and one front tire are slipping. No thanks, already have one.
