These engines are squared in design so in theory should have a good flat powerband. but have a lot going on.
Multiple injection modes. multiple displacement capability(Modified Atkinson basically cuts compression strokes by leaving the intake valve open longer, reducing effective displacement while this is done.
So when you are demanding power (using the throttle)this engine goes all direct injection and starts using the full compression stroke. What you are feeling is the actual engine unleashed from fuel efficiency controls. Once you get up to speed and have to ease up on the throttle to prevent losing control or getting pulled over the engine controls will start reinstating the Atkinson open Intake valve overlap.
That is why it seems like a surge. It is a surge. It not just old fashioned power band.

I thought it only had 150 or so. I
    am apparently mistaken.

I'll go with the stickers. They definitely added more HP.

I think it was actually a 455, not the 454 we all know and love... Sorry, not trying to be Richard Cranium.

Still love rolling into the throttle in 3rd and letting it eat for highway on ramps. First file that really opened that up was 1.03B 91. Oh yeah.
I STILL think that file was better for raw power in 6th on the highway than 1.05. Anyway, it's all good.

This chart kinda verifies my results in the torque app. I had peak HP at 5655 rpm. For an app,4-5 hundred rpm is pretty close to actual dyno results. Elevation and temp differences between my results and those shown could easily account for that variation.

Soo what I'm getting from this is ~2750rpm and below the 2.7L makes MORE power and torque than the 3.5L. (stock vs stock)

Also the 4cyl doesn't have a torque curve, it has a plateau lol.

I think I like second gear best, get it rolling and shift to 2nd about 15 mph and then roll into the throttle and watch it take off....

Could you explain this graph to me (in laymans terms). How would the difference between the 2.7L and the 3.5L manifest itself?

I don't mind the revvy engine cruising around town or accelerating. However, having to rev to maintain speed on the interstate is annoying. The truck is so much smoother and quieter in 5th or 6th gear on the interstate compared to revving in 4th just to maintain the speed limit.

So where did you get that dyno sheet?

On paper, the stock 3rd gen 2.7 gets what, 159hp peak... at the crank.

I'm calling bullshit OR modified lol.

Those OVtune 3.5 sheets are at the rear wheel.

    Anyway, fun times!

No lol. Think about the stock 2.7 hp and torque numbers and look at that chart carefully. Definitely not at the rear wheels or that engine was modified (or it's just a random pretty chart).

About 20 years ago, when I was a teenager. I had a friend, another teenager, that ran an insurance fraud ring. He would steal cars for owners and completely total' the cars. Then the owners would report their cars as stolen.

One night we were all hanging out on a street corner, and a lexus SC drives up to us and burns rubber. The windows were tinted so we couldn't tell who it was. Long story short it was my friend.

After an hour of joy riding, we took the car to a nearby river. My friend put a big rock on the accelerator pedal, and we waited. after about ten minutes, the engine caught on fire, and he pushed the car into the river. We did a lot crazy crap that night like driving into a tree at 20 miles an hour, and e-brake turning at 40 miles an hour. It's affected how I view cars to this day. I witnessed one of Toyota's legendary engines catch on fire (either the I6 or V8 I don't remember) by over-reving, so I am weary about by rev'ing an engine for too long.
