Pro suspension question

Wanting to maybe put a winch on my pro, and add a 1/2 - 3/4 inch top plate spacer. I only want to do so if I can add a hydraulic bump stop of some sort as to not compromise the integrity of the fox shocks. Not sure if this is possible though, thinking no but thought I'd float it out to some more mechanically experienced folks. If not I think I'll take out the fox shocks and go kings.

Based on my research adding top plate spacer changes where the shocks hit the bump stops and can cause damage and bend shocks from over compressing before hitting the bump stop

 

Yea. Also your spring rate is going to be way too soft and not perform right with the added weight.

 

1/2 to 3/4 shouldn’t affect anything. People put 3” spacers in, those will cause problems.

More weight your spring is going to be compressed more and too soft.

 

Compressing a spring won’t make it too soft.

Adding a winch will add weight to the front. So the front might drop down a little bit. It depends on the winch and bumper you get but some of them are very small amounts.

Adding a spacer preloads the spring to compensate for this. It’s a viable option, and will not affect anything in a way that you can tell. It is so minimal.

If you add a large 3” spacer, you’re preloading the spring a ton and you’re going to have ride issues and articulation issues, but a 1/2” spacer will not be noticeable, especially with added weight in the front.

A $100 dollar spacer is much better than a $3000 dollar suspension upgrade for this purpose, or you can leave it be and do nothing, the winch won’t do much unless you add a massive bumper too. But do what you want, just don’t ask us to justify your purchase. It’s your money.

I had a winch and bumper on the factory Fox Pros. As a poster mentioned previously, the 650 lb spring weight was too low to handle the additional weight. Not only did it sag (can correct that with spacers), it also nose dived at stops and turns.

I upgraded to ADS and sold my Pros. Should get about $1500 towards your new setup. Problem solved.

you don't have to spend $800 on hydraulic bumpstops plus cost of putting them in to put the coil spacers in. Just space out your bumpstops by replacing them with wheelers superbumps with an additional spacer or two. Like others have said, depending on how you mount the winch, the additional weight may be too much for your stock fox shocks. If you do a simple hidden winch plate then that will only add around 60lbs to the front end which should be fine. Once you start going low pro bumper or full bumper to mount the winch then you are adding a considerable amount of weight that can warrant stiffer springs.

 

Personal opinion... even with a low pro and winch, it's too much. Not by a large margin, but it is.



Edit: but I also have heavy steel sliders and aluminum IFS and mid skids.

 

yea low pro is the heaviest I would go without upgrading springs. A hidden winch plate would be better for not doing the springs. But at that point and price, may as well just start upgrading IMO

1. A 1/2" will harm nothing and the factory bump stop will still work fine. Your truck will retain nearly all factory ride characteristics.
2. A spacer placed above the coil/shock assembly will not impact the spring rate AT ALL. It will ride the exact same as is does factory. Only spacers placed between the spring and the upper shock body will impact the spring rate.
3. The only added weight is a few ounces so I'm not sure what the post referencing added weight is referring to.

Do yourself a favor and ignore posts from people that are don't really know what they're talking about.

 

In what world is a winch a few ounces? Let alone, you need to add steel to mount one. 100+ lbs over the front axle is a noticeable change.

The spring rate won't change with the addition of a spacer, but the added weight will affect the ride on those springs.

I wouldn't discredit people's advice on this forum... collectively, they've done more to these trucks than you could fathom. Many Pro suspension owners have had to swap suspension due to added weight, me included.

As others have suggested, if you're concerned, replace them with wicked wheelers superbumps... much more affordable
