Guys I have 1991 Range Rover, ( terrible vehicle by all means )
On this thing engine is about to go out, I was looking at putting Japanese take out Tacoma engine,
( ultimate slap or Land Rover lovers face ;)
    I have few questions,

the engine I wanna put it is 5VZFEE engine,
what kind of manual transmission will work on those engines?

and Range Rover is full time 4x4 with center dif lock,
If I go head and use Toyota Tcase does It have center diff lock ?

what kind of engine wiring and ECU will I need to make the motor run?

    Thank you very much,

    Eric

This isn’t going to be an easy project.

You’re going to have to rip out almost every single stock foot of Range Rover wiring from the engine bay, to the transmission, to the body, to the interior and replace it with a donor harness.

Some body functions like AC, Radio, lights, locks, etc you may be able to keep but with extensive modification which requires merging the Land Rover and Toyota harnesses.

I hope you like welding and fabricating too, because you’ll need to make all new engine and transmission perches.

This is a lot of work, and definitely not worth it on a car like that. It will cost you a lot of money, time, and heartache.

Fitting the engine and transmission is easy, but when you get to wiring it will be an absolute nightmare.

If you’re OK wiring, fabricating, welding, and all of the stuff it takes to do it go for it. I would buy an entire wrecked truck. If you want to keep AWD/Center Diff Lock buy a later 3rd Gen 4Runner Limited (2001ish to 2002)

The Tacoma R151F manual transmission is paired with the 3.4L 5VZ. The transfercase is center diff locked in 4wd high and low

    Oh man! Subbed.

My friend had a 1993 Hunter edition with a smaller V8... Most unreliable truck in the history of humanity. Would make an excellent trail rig with a Toyota drive train.

Easier to just install the Range Rover body on a Toyota Drive Train .

It will be a interesting fun project

The wiring will not be all that bad just like putting any other manufactures engine in a vehicle.given you have wiring schematics for every vehicle

The fact it is a Range Rover means your all on your own exploring virgin territory lots of trail and error

Welding and fabrication is not a problem at all,
as long as I can get the engine to start with proper wiring and ECU everything else should be easy.

Transmission I am going with manual so I don’t have to deal with transmission control unit.

This is likely very true. You should consider doing a lot of measuring and determine if it's a better path.

It will be a project. (FTFY)

    Amen.

And lets hope it actually sees a trail someday. :fingerscrossed: :D

    Have you considered a 1UZ or 2UZ V8?

No I haven’t lookined into those,
I was thinking v6 would be better option because Land Rover came with small 3.9 v8 that makes same amount of power as 1943 Russian sawing machine lol
under the hood there is not much space for 2uz v8.

plus I wanna do manual transmission.

Ok great that won’t be hard to find.

So all the 4wd 4 runners and Tacoma’s in the years you mentioned came with center Diff Lock Tcase?

That said, I hope you do succeed. I love the look of that era RR and having it with a reliable Toyota drive train would just be sublime. Good luck.

they only look cool, and I agree, that’s why I am still hanging on to it.
They are terrible in every possible way,

Interior is so bad, it’s crumbling apart,
Drivetrain is basically as bad as it could come.
I think 98% of those Range rovers and discovery’s been turned into Coca-Cola cans long time ago.
Discovery was so bad that Land Rover didn’t use that name in USA for a long time, they called it LR3 in Europe that’s discovery 3.

1999-2000 limited and 2001-2002 4runners have a multi mode tcase with AWD but the rest are center diff locked
