MTD's 85' hunk o' junk rebirth

Well, just bought an 85' Toyota pickup 4x4 last night. It's in rough shape, but it was cheap so I went ahead and bought it. It's the 4 speed manual, with a 2BL carb. Good amount of rust in the bed, but that doesn't bother me to much, it will eventually be replaced with a flat bed. Not currently running, think theres a problem with a fuel filter or pump cuz it will start, but then die out. Leaking oil from the crank gasket, and the carb is leaking a little bit of gas. Other than that, the transmission, transfer case, both SOLID AXLES and what not are all solid.

Initial plans are to:
1) Get it running (that's always important!)
2) Replace all fluids.
3) Clean everything up, sand off any surface rust and get it painted over, weld patches over rust holes.
4) Paint it flat black (I think it looks mean on these old yota's!)
5) New tires.

Hoping all that is complete by Oct so I can take it wheeling at least once before deploying.

Post return plans are:
1) Mild lift, 3-4".
2) Armor it up for the trail.
3) Lockers, front and rear.
4) Flat bed.
5) Wheel it up!

And if anyone could identify this as the stock aisin carburetor (From my research, I think thats what the stock carb is, if not I humbly bow to your greater knowledge of old toyotas!) it would be appreciated!




This build is going to be a big learning experience for me, I've never had to do much work beyond basic maintenance on vehicles before, so it's my first time getting into some more complicated stuff.

 

Nice truck. I think the broke plastic thing is a choarcol canister. Its for emitions.

 

Nice looking rig, could be a lot of fun! You looking to turn it into a 4wheeling machine? Or just restore it?

 

The plastic can has something to do with the pulse type air injection system. Air injection usually means you have a smog pump, not on this motor.

 

By the way, it took me about a week longer than I had wanted to get started on working on the truck. First I got it onto base, dropped it in the parking lot of the barracks and returned the trailer to UHaul. Next day, got a ticket from the MP's saying if it wasn't gone in 3 days, it would be towed. Took a day, but I found a guy from work with a trailer, who kindly let me use it for a fifth of Jim Bean. I moved the truck to my friends house in our off base-base housing, and the next day, received another warning saying it would get towed. (this one was a sticker on the windshield, and not one of the easy to get off stickers, it was one of the you'll never get it all, muahahaha stickers) Borrowed the kind alcoholics trailer again, and this time, moved it into a storage area, where I will hopefully be able to get it running before needing to move it again.

Don't think so, theres another canister that I believe to be the charcoal canister, will take more pictures tomorrow.

It's going to be mostly an trail rig. May end up driving it to work, since I have a very short drive, to try and save pointless miles on the taco. (live on base, its about a 4 minute drive to work)

Hmmmm, so i could plug that piece that's still on the motor, and it wouldn't matter?

 

And that is definitely a stock 22r carb. That little window on the front will let you see the fuel level in the carb bowl. If you still have fuel in there when the motor stalls out, then the fuel pump is okay. I can tell you from experience that any significant vacuum leak on these will cause it to rev up quickly when started, then stall out. I seem to remember there being a large vacuum line you had to remove from the intake in order to remove the air cleaner. If that one is off, the motor will not stay running.

Yup, it's been a few years since I've worked on one of these, but if memory serves me, you can just plug that off with no issues. Should be able to follow the plumbing for it over to the exhaust manifold. If that's where it goes to, then no issues.

The egr valve is bolted to the head just behind the carb on the passenger side. You don't want to mess with that, the motor will run way to lean without it and will ping like crazy.

 

Thank you! Guess I'll order a rebuild kit, and learn how to do that soon! Interesting tip there, never knew that. Guess I'll have to check. Replaced the fuel filter hoping that was the problem, but I'm pretty sure it's the pump now.

Will definitely have to look into this tomorrow, mooch-oh grassy-ass! (mucho gracias, spelled how I pronounce it)

 

Looks like I'm going to have to get a new carburetor, the valves at the top won't function properly, and it's also missing the idle compensator, which is not a piece that you can buy anywhere. I'd like to get a Weber Redline series, but it is a lot cheaper to go with a rebuilt Aisin and get the core charge back as well, so that will probably be where I go with it, depending on how open my wallet is feeling the day I order!

 

It was surprisingly a lot easier to find than I thought it would be. I had checked around a couple months ago and found nothing. Started looking again one week and they were all over!

 

I have the same exact truck with bucketseats and a 84

 

Waiting on a new carburetor to come in the mail, so I did some a little bit of interior work. Stripped everything off of the floor (extremely simple when it is just a bunch seat, some seat belts, and a rubber floor mat!), cleaned all the dirt off the floor and sprayed in some truck bed liner. Looks pretty great! Also dropped the front skid plate, and the gas tank skid, and I'm gonna drop the gas tank today. Going to bring those over to the auto hobby shop on base and drop them in a solvent tank. Also took the mirrors, and the wipers off, going to sand the rust off and spray paint them black. That's probably all I will get done for a few weeks. Headed off to Wyoming for a week for training, then gonna take some leave and go home.

After I get back from that, I will have the new carb, and I'm going to replace the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and battery. Change the oil, and see if she'll fire up!

What did you end up giving for it if I might ask?
Down here in SC, people think they have gold when it comes to old yota's like that.

 

Payed a grand, and have spent $30 on the bedliner, and about to drop around $300 on a weber carb to replace the stock aisin. It's going to need tires and a brake job as well, but I'm about to deploy in a couple months so I'm saving a lot of stuff for when I get back. Right now I'm just doing the little things, that wont matter that they then had to sit for multiple months




Finished up the wiper arms today, look a hell of a lot better!

 

Well, just got word that I am deploying early. Leaving real soon, for an unknown period of time, to a destination that they are not to sure of yet (I wish I was kidding). We will be going over to do humanitarian ops in Pakistan, then continuing to our earlier planned deployment when we finish up in Pakiland. So for now, the build is on hold, until further notice.

 

Well, still not home to work on this, but the following parts have been ordered and are waiting in NC for my return.

Nitro 5.29 gears (picked up with the group buy Sierra Expeditions had, what a deal!)
Weber 32/36 Carburetor
Marlin Crawlers brake upgrade kit
4XInnovations differential housing armor
BallisticFab axle truss and under diff armor

In the plans is a spool locker for the rear, a Detroit or Aussie auto locker in the front. Haven't decided on what to do for the lift, but it's between an OME (for cost and ease of installation), a full Trail-Gear suspension, or the full All-Pro suspension. Those should give 5" of lift. Tires will be some used 35's I pick up off of craigslist or nc4x4 at first. Also want to get the Marlin Crawler front bumper, and a set of the 4xInnovation sliders. I'm also going to try my hand at welding up a custom flat bed with a welder that my buddy is buying when we get back to the states.
