Bed Storage - Simple DIY

Figured I'd share a simple, effective, inexpensive, DIY solution I came up with and have been using for storing things in the bed of my gen3 DCLB. Strategically glued and screwed poly blocks cut from an old cutting board to the bottom of some plastic storage bins I picked up at THD. The blocks fit into the channels in the floor of the bed and keep things from sliding around. It's also easy to pull the bins out and plop them in the garage with everything still organized when I need to use the bed for hauling.

 

Nice work. I have a bed mat, so not for me, but sans bedmat - tgat's a great idea.

 

That's a good idea ! I've got a couple containers in the shop that look like those. They may be the same. Thanks for the tip.

That's right !

I'm not too fond of bed mats myself. Had them in the past. What I prefer is safety tape, or skateboard tape (it goes by different names) applied to the top of the bed's ribs. Like this stuff:

As you can see, I also carry a ratcheting cargo bar for securing larger stuff. This one is in its 3rd truck. Lowes and Home Depot have them for about $25.

 

I like the ratchet bar idea... I've got tons of rubber tie-down straps that keep stuff secure. The bins have been working real well too.

I'm also working on a custom bike mount solution that doesn't cost $250!

 

does this gadget put stress on the bed sides?

 

It sure does, btdt. Gave up on those long ago.

UPDATE:
The skateboard tape turned out to be way more grippy than I expected. I found this other alternative, a diamond tread pattern rubber bed mat. I needed something thin so my range cart would fit under the tonneau. Its about 1/8" - 3/16" thick, and meets my needs.

I also think that it looks pretty nice. I left the skateboard tape under it. It doesn't move.

EDIT: The Amazon fit guide says that it does not fit a 2019, but they are wrong. It fits my Access cab's 6' bed perfectly.

 

is the diamond plate mat ridged enough to span the grooves in the bed floor without drooping? thanks

 

Hmmmm.... good question. I think the answer is yes, but hadn't really considered that. I'll take a close look at it tomorrow morning and let you know.

 

It "looks" like it is rigid enough, but I've only had the mat in there a few days. Temperature has been in the mid 80's. I took a couple low angle photos and couldn't see any droop. You decide.

 

Spend less more in this category so you can spend more money on performance upgrades! I like!
