Just checked my oil and realized that the dipstick is reading a different level on each side.

The side with the "dimples/holes" projecting out reads perfectly on the second highest "dimple." The side with just the holes reads a bit higher. Is this normal? I'm guessing the side with the projecting dimples is the one to check?

Sorry for the simple/dumb question, my previous Toyota have a different type of dipstick that was easier to read.

I usually let mine sit overnight before checking the oil level.

I haven't pulled my dipstick out in a while...but unless it goes in perfectly vertical you will get the oil "higher" on one side. It likely enters at an angle.

Thanks for the info guys. Truck had been sitting for two days before I checked the level. Guessing as long as one side reads within the norm it should be fine. My all trac's dipstick is much easier to read than this flimsy thing.

Take a piece of fine sandpaper (400 up) and lightly scuff the dipstick. Wipe it off and it will be much easier to read next time.

Proper way to check is run engine, then let sit for 20 mins with engine off. Says so in the manual. Although I’ve always done it the way you do. Guess Toyota HAS to be different :notsure:

These are difficult to read because synthetic oil doesn’t “stick” like dead dinosaurs. Some people have sanded the end of the dipstick to aid the adhesion and therefore making it easier to read.

I just put 6 qts and close the dipstick. I've also realized that you can't get a good oil level reading so I go by the lowest level reading.

I think it depends on how the oil is formulated. Redline Synthetic oil has properties that help it stick to metal supposedly.
