Well I pulled the trigger on a 2019 TRD Off Road premium package w/KDSS and dumped the 17 TRD Off Road Tacoma...

It is actually nice to have a transmission that is not searching for what gear to be in,leaking rear diff, vibrations in the steering wheel and drive line shutter every so often.

I’ve had my Tacoma for a whole 600 miles and still haven’t noticed the transmission constantly hunting for gears. Yesterday I had to stomp on it to pass: the transmission promptly downshifted and the engine pulled with little drama and authority. No complaints on that front whatsoever.

I wonder if what some people feel in the transmission is related to switching tire sizes?

On Jeeps, using an OBD programmer you can easily reprogram for tire different sizes, which not only calibrates the speedometer but also the transmission shift points. The fact that you cannot do the same on Tacoma seems like an oversight on Toyota’s part.

Traded my 2016 SR5 for 2019 TRD sport three weeks ago. Love them equally. Took a 200 mile trip over hill and dale a few days ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

i also have a 2007 nissan xterra 4x4. it is very much like the 4runner in hp/torque. the xterra is way more "peppier" than the tacoma 3.5 but that's to be expected due to the less torque of the motor. and also i have a tune and some bolt on mods but stock to stock that xterra is still peppier. The taco gets better mpgs than the xterra or the current 4runner. it's like 16/20 vs 18/22. The current 4runner is using the 4.0 engine which is abt the same as my xterra's engine from 2007 mpg/power/tech wise. i thought abt getting a frontier instead of the taco but i like the taco's look way better and it's a toyota and has killer ground clearance etc. perhaps turning on the ect power would help???? That does give it a better "feel" though i have not used it a whole lot yet as i have 300 miles on the truck or so. there are other threads on here talking about how the ect give better power AND better mpgs (somehow).

Hey, congrats man. If you're happier with the 4R, that's all that matters.

It is a such a better riding vehicle and with Toyota saying the leaking diff and the now noticeable hum that started a few weeks back is normal it was time to take my equity and run. I was very fortunate to go to the 4 runner for an even deal same payment and no money out of pocket...

Don't get me wrong the Tacoma's are nice trucks and have many more tech features than the 4 runner in some aspects. Other than some of the issues that started popping up I loved the thing.

The better power comes from holding gear longer which in reality, degrades mpg.

when I was shopping for a 19 pickup, Toyotas website listed the 19 engine was "retuned" for more low end torque. I love mine so far. Yes, the tranny shifts more than I like, but the good outweighs the bad.

Don't be shocked if you hear a few noises from the Tacoma engine, direct injection is kind of noisy and there is a cleaning cycle that also can be loud. Also if you happen to be near your truck about 5 hours after you turn it off you may hear what sounds like the fuel pump running, that is normal too as it's doing a evap test.

the stang has direct injection too but that's a totally different noise. in summary, lots of mustang 5.0 owners are not pleased with a random typewriter noise and ford came out with a ssb stating it's normal but did not say why it's doing it. the why it is doing it part is what the issue is as some have had scored cylinders and engine replacements- that still make the same noise. it has been theorized that the typewriter noise is caused by loose internal engine tolerances but ford isn't saying either way.

my 2007 xterra makes noises too but those are all normal- been that way since 2008 and 140k miles ago. LOL. she doesn't use oil and runs like a champ..

most noises don't bug me if i know what they are.

Right, just wanted to make you aware of random Tacoma noises, most are nothing to worry about.

I have put 1000 miles on my 19 so far, and didn’t have any issues with transmission shifting until I put a 2500 lb trailer behind it. Going up a hill, it would shift 5-4-3-4-5 over and over spending 2 seconds in each gear. It was very rhythmic, but annoying. Put it in s4 and it was better.

great, I have a boat I'm itching to get out, hopefully the towing with this truck is acceptable...I'm sticking with S4 and may use S5 on flat ground. Boat weighs about 4 grand I guess.

Try turning ECT on while towing.

The shudder in my 19 off road has always been a pain in the ass but has continually gotten worse. I experience it starting from about 40 mph to 65 or 70. It's pretty pathetic and if I could go back there's no way I'd buy it again. I purchased ovtune and it didn't do anything for the issue whatsoever. Granted there's supposed to be a new "fix" for that specifically being release by Mat any day now.

I went from a 2017 DCSB SR V6 4x4 with only the tow and convince package to a 2019 TRD Pro stock. They drive similar. The brakes feel totally different and are different- master cylinder and TSS. I prefer the cloth over the leather- especially when the sun is out.

The difference between the 2017 and the 2019 in drivability is the same.

The power rear window and sunroof are a bonus and should be standard in all vehicles. My SR had the stock entune and the Pro has the JBL. After upgrading the SR's speakers, the SR sounds better on the stock head unit than the Pro's JBL does.

I got the 2019 because I wanted a power rear window and a sunroof. I also kept the 2017.

If you are upgrading for features- sunroof, TSS, etc, then it is worth it.IMG_9471.jpg

I have never had a need for off road capability. I believe the less complex 2X4 has potentially fewer issues than the 4X4. I had a 2016 SR5 2X4 for three years and just traded for a 2019 TRD sport 2X4. I was/am totally happy with both. Sorry for your disappointment.
