Good price for 2004 Tacoma?

That same truck was on local Craigsllist last month for $7000. I'm pretty sure a dealer picked it up and is flipping for $5k profit.

To address OP's questions, the 2.4 only came in the 2wd non-prerunner trucks. The 2.7 came in Prerunners and 4x4 models. Both are great motors, the 2.7 makes like 15hp more.

There was a reg cab here in Albuquerque area that was listed for $8k. It had 120K miles on it. I've followed listings for 1st gens on my local CL, Albuquerque area, for the last 5 years. I've not seen too many reg cabs and the ones that are in good shape are minimum $7k. These days, any 1st gen seems to be going for a good price here. It almost looks as if they are going up in resale price.

Blue Book on the truck says about 4k. They are asking almost double. They did say the truck had the frame recall done at a Toyota dealer, but have not seen it on paper yet.

 

is it stated in the ad somewhere and i missed it?

In economics we have a "term"(criteria?) for it: "willing and able." They have to want it and be able to purchase it. How much do you want it and can you fork over the cash for it. I dont want an overpriced vehicle. Maybe someone else does. I could technically purchase it, maybe that other person cant. In both scenarios the sale wont be made. Maybe drop it a few thousand dollars until you find the market price.

Kbb is notoriously low on these trucks. Nada has average retail on a 99 base 4x4 (in the OP dealership’s zip code) at $7050. Sales for that price and more are well documented right here on TW. Just because a third gen owner wouldn’t buy it doesn’t mean the market isn’t there.

@Wixo for that price you’re getting completely unknown maintainence history, a rotted through frame, and a beat to shit interior. If that’s what you’re looking for out of a first gen, happy hunting

 

TBH, I would get it as a mud pit toy. As long as its running and the frame isnt completely destroyed I'd go for it. Who cares about the interior, Im gonna cake it in mud and do all the shit I wouldnt do with my 3rd gen, screw it.

My brother recently bought a 32 year old poop colored VW vanagon with a blown motor for like $14k, and some people laugh at paying 7k for a Toyota truck with a brand new frame.

Bluebook is somewhat useless, especially for trucks like 1st gen Tacomas. They use algorithms to figure out how much a vehicle is "worth" based on it's original price, age, mileage and locality adjustments. I bet you they'd value a numbers matching 67 mustang fastback at like $500.

It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. 1st gen Tacomas in GOOD condition are worth a shit ton of money because they are getting harder and harder to find, and people are willing to pay it.

Depending on your location, that 4cyl single cab could fetch close to $9k in some areas. I know people who wouldn't think twice of paying that much. There are trucks, admittedly v6 trd doublecabs with low miles etc... going for easily twice what they're asking for that one.


If that's too much money for you, go in with a lowball, but don't be surprised if they laugh you out of the dealer because they know there are probably 5-10 guys waiting on it.

I must have missed where it said it got a new frame in the add. I didn't see anything about a frame replacement from a VIN lookup (here) either. Generally the pre-2000's truck were scrapped, but it's always possible someone did it themselves.

there are probably small factions within the 1st gen community as well
like you might have little interest in an xtracab or single cab as i would have little interest in having a double cab with the 4 doors and snazzy grille, even though its the same darned engine!
I need a long bed (not sure if your's is short bed or long)

and then there is the Consumer theory economics with the complimentary & substitute goods and elasticity of demand, which may or may not explain the perplexities being seen in the small compact truck segment and what some deem as irrational prices for 15 to nearly 25yr old trucks.
I am curious if the other compact truck makers are also seeing this phenom or is it just us

 

I dont think it was replaced I think it was fixed before it rusted out. The truck was supposedly garage kept. If they still have it this weekend I'm going to check it out.
