Are TRD springs any different from SR5?

    Hey All, My SR5 4x4 got hit and a rear leaf spring got bent. So now I'm looking at wrecked trucks to pull one or a pair out of. Are the TRD springs any better for load rating or anything?

    TRD just adds Bilstein Shocks but I don't believe the rear spring design or load capacity is any different than the SR5. Stock springs are known to get weak though, so you might consider this a chance to put in some new OEM or aftermarket springs.

    As long as you get springs from a comparable year (95.5-97's have shorter leaf springs than 98+) they will be pretty much identical. As Drew said, the load capacity is the same, hell I'm pretty sure there isn't any difference at all. The front coils might be progressive rate, but I don't think that really happened until the 2nd gen TRDs, but I could be wrong.

    Honestly though, looking at junkyard springs they'll just be worn out old springs too, so if you want to try and save a bunch of cash, sure, but assume they are just as worn out (just not crash damaged, lol).

    There aren't really a lot of aftermarket "stock height" spring options for 1st gens, at least options that don't tend to have a reputation for sagging (like General springs). If you're interested in lifting your truck, there are several more options. There are some spring shops out there that do semi custom work, but IMO going genuine OEM is prohibitively expensive. Spend that kind of money and you could get the semi-custom leafs built exactly to your specifications (i.e. higher weight capacity).

    Keep in mind though, getting stiffer springs doesn't actually increase how much weight you can carry in the bed. The GVWR is set by the manufacturer and cannot be altered. Stiffer springs just make it sag less under a given weight.

    My 1998 TRD Limited has progressive front sprints.

    Look into General Spring in KS. They make extremely reasonably priced HD springs for Tacoma's or factory replacements. I put the HD springs on and have been very happy with the quality, ride, etc.

    The TRD package had progressive front coils and different camber rear springs along with a thicker sway bar. That's straight from Toyota.
