Issues with service at dealer - 2018 Offroad

It’s respones like this, that make people wonder why they ask legitimate questions for help.

 

So do they say the airbags blow up and kill people on several vehicles so that is normal as well? Bring stuff back in and make sure to get print outs of paperwork. Paper trail is always good to have should things escalate to lemon law stuff.

 

Have you read the TSB or heard from people who get the fix for the diff whine? The fix is to add spacers to the rear springs or some such (I read it on Tacoma World, it must be true), so the sound isn't transmitted along metal components. They don't actually change anything about the way the differential operates, it's an "auditory" cosmetic problem.

 

when does the diff make noise? My truck has a noise i can hear at 1200 or so RPM and i can't tell if its exhaust noise which seems unlikely or the diff.

 

Let me see if I have this straight. Those water droplets are from the 3rd brake light, but they are normal because you have a vehicle with a sunroof that will carry the water through the sunroof tray and down to the ground via the sunroof drain lines? If you had a vehicle that lacked a sunroof, those drops would be on your headliner and then the floor of your truck because there is no way for them to find the ground? That's almost the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Almost.

 

I had a new Tundra that leaked bad. Sold the truck, luckily I paid $6.5k under msrp. After avoiding Toyota’s for a few years, a couple of years ago bought a new Tacoma ext cab that leaked from day 1. It was the rear door. Dealer could not fix it so I sold it. I recently bought new Tacoma double cab against my better judgement. So far no leaky cab problems. New vehicles should not leak at all, ever.

 

I’ve also been in many brand new Tacoma’s that had zero whine or vibrations. So my point is, if they come without those sounds from the factory, then they shouldn’t have that kind of sound being semi new, and complaining about it is Completely fair. If he was referring to a Tacoma with 80k miles, different story.

 

Your diff should be ok for now. It looks to be dripping @ 2 DPC (drips per century)

I’ve been to hell and back with the differential whine. Had a 2017 OR 4x4 AT of which I made the dealership do all TSBs regarding the whine and replace the differential. The TSB did nothing. Whine was just as bad after all parts were replaced and insulation installed. After the differential replacement, the whine seem to be less noticeable, but marginal.

I have a 2019 OR 4x4 AT now and the noise is just as bad, if not worse. After much frustration I do believe your options are to accept it as a tacoma trait and just enjoy the truck or get some tires that hum just enough that you won’t notice it anymore.

I haven’t seen any TSBs for the 2019 yet, but when I do, it will be hard for me justify the effort again for such a minimal improvement. After the differential swap the jackasses at the dealership left my driveline baring carrier hanging on by a thread or two. Don't know how it didn’t come off on my way home.

 

Grrr...that’s frustrating. I understand how upsetting that would be. Whenever I have an issue with my truck I have to weigh how big of a deal the issue is vs. some “clown” jumping in my truck to fix the issue and screwing up something else.

 

FWIW, when I test drove a 2019 TRDOR manual, it did have a very noticeable whine coming from the driveline. To me it seemed normal, based on the fact that the gearing on manual transmission Tacomas is much lower. The lower gearing on manual transmission Tacomas is pretty obvious when you pull out in first gear.

My Rubicons all whined pretty loudly when I engaged its super low transfer case. I considered it part of the experience.

Personally I like that whine: it reminds me of a sound characteristic of strong, low-geared trucks.

 

My 2017 turd pro MT whines too. I have decided that its not bad enough to have the interior ripped apart for the tsb. There is enough evidence that the noise persists with the TSB and replacememt diffs.

My diff also has seepage on both sides. This I need to address.

 

I agree that the whine is something I have heard on almost every manual transmission vehicle I have ever used. From a large tractor to a school bus, etc. obviously this isn’t desirable, but seems normal enough and not something that will hurt the vehicle or effect is longevity. Fortunately I don’t have the 3rd brake light issue or the rear differential leak on my 2019 TRD OR.

 

I also have a 2018 TRD OR M/T I agree with the general responses here. I have the diff howl. Took it into the dealer, and the master tech confirmed the issue. After they contact Toyota, Toyota informed them that my truck already has the parts per the TSB, and that the noise is a normal characteristic of the truck. Honestly it's just a resonance issue, and there is no effect on performance of the truck, and it causes no damage. There are tons of threads on here about it.

I also had the diff leak, the simple fix is to have them retorque the bolts and ensure the fluid is up.

The other stuff is not characteristic. Water in there is a big no no. Either try another dealer or contact Toyota corporate and open up a case with them. Cheers and good luck

 

I also changed out my front and rear differential oil to Amsoil. There was a large piece of metal, about 1/4” around that looked like it was from a drill point as it pushed through making a hole. Also, a fair amount of shavings. I highly recommend dumping your rear differential oil.

 

When I bought my 95 SR5 it made a whine, but only when in gear or idling in neutral. It's a high pitch. I put a new clutch/TOB in at 170k and it went away for maybe 10 minutes, then was right back. The 4 dealers I drove up to the techs and asked said all 1st gen MTs do that. The only way to fix it is to move to a 2nd gen or swap to a T56.

 

I have the same truck and options as you. I just had the TSB 0013-18 performed and it reduced the diff whine about 50%. For me, that is acceptable. However, if you want to argue the point, ask them how a MT has anything to do with diff whine (since they specifically told you that). Also, I had some similar oil weeping on the diff. The tech retorqued the nuts and cleaned the oil off. I will continue to monitor that and am good with that as well if it fixes it. Regarding your sunroof, I have a hard time understanding how a 3rd brake light leak would even show up there. If you had a 3rd brake light leak, you would have water leaking down the back window as well. Your truck would smell moldy for sure. I think what you are seeing is the sunroof leaking. A small amount of leaking (dripping) in a car wash scenario is perfectly normal as long as the water makes it out of the truck via the drain tubes. If you see it leaking in a rain storm, I would have they look at it further.

 

The definition of insanity...... doing the exact same fucking thing over and over again, expecting shit to change. That. Is. Crazy. Maybe try the 2020 ?

 

IMO, the diff isn't even CLOSE to leaking! It is not wet, it is not even damp! Not enough to make one single drop appear on the bottom of the pumpkin. That is probably 2 drops of oil that migrated during assembly at the factory. Do you really want them tearing apart your diff for that? Just tryin' to help but if you are going to do battle with the dealership, choose your battles wisely.

 

Those rain drops inside the truck is totally unacceptable and would piss me off and drive me nuts , they need to fix that BS . I have a sunroof too .
