Hey all. The other day, I noticed that the spot welds on my driver's side bed are rusting through the paint. The passenger side is perfect and is actually covered up better by the rubber trim piece.

Is this just a common occurrence? My truck has 13K miles on it now. Truck Bed.jpg Drivers Side Rust.jpg Drivers Side Rust 2.jpg

This is a pretty common issue, especially on white where you can really notice the rust. Dealer should repair this for you under warranty.
It's too bad Toyota is having these types of body rust issues on new trucks.

Thanks. Yes I agree, the white makes it too easy to notice these tiny issues. Although realistically, they're probably not harmful in any way. I might reach out to the dealer. Even though I've already been there enough for one life time haha

The rust warranty only covers when sheetmetal rusts all the way through. Dealer won't do anything for you on this unless you pay.

Personally I would knock it down with some sandpaper as best I could and touch it up by hand. In that spot who cares if you do an ugly touch up.

If the dealership truly won't touch it via warranty, then I will just ignore it. I'd rather not mess with the paint/sanding. If it gets bad enough, at least Toyota won't be able to say "you caused it yourself".

I guess this is downside of meticulous carwashing, you keep finding stuff. :annoyed:

Pop the strip on floor where it goes from metal to carpet at the door and you'll see a bunch of rust on those pinch welds. My truck is Black and in certain areas you can see the primer underneath the black paint because they were so cheap with the paint.

Sandpaper and touch up paint on a truck with 13k? I don't think so. There have been many on here that have gotten the dealer/Toyota corporate to cover the repair. That rust is not acceptable on a next to new truck.

    It's covered under 3yr/36 warranty. It's a defect.

I wonder if anyone has specifically complained about this to Toyota? Meaning, will they actually do something about it?

I'll probably take it in and see what they say. Will update as soon as I find out!

There is a previous thread regarding the same issue. They had their issue resolved by the dealership removing the rust spots and repainting the bed.

I looked around and couldn't find a thread. If you happen to have a link, please do share it. Thanks!

Is it actual rust or is it white car fallout rust? Try getting at it with a clay bar first

Im not entirely sure. It doesn't rub off and it's coming out from under the clear coat and paint. Only on and around the spot welds.

This is not true, I had some surface rust fixed under warranty on my 16. Approach dealer before you diy.

I recall reading it sometime ago last year; I checked the weld spots in the bed of the truck to see if there were any. You have to look behind the rubber flap to see the weld spots. Also, take a look at the door sill plate.

This happened to me and Toyota paid for the repair...cost was just under $1800. The dealer bodyshop did an excellent job still looks cherry six months later.

In other words, don't sand and touch up the spot welds yourself

OP, make sure you called corporate and open a case. It is always better to call them to make them aware of this issue for data collection etc. The more people that call the better, it would benefit us all as an end result.

Am I best off calling my regional Toyota office? I found a number for my region. But not sure if that's the right place to call in order to start a case.
