Any other OR owners elect to ADD the air dam?

There's a difference between keeping it if you already have it, and going out of your way to buy/mount one that didn't come with the truck. I'm not going to own the truck for 20 years, and I almost assuredly wouldn't get a 1mpg improvement. Therefore, MY personal savings would be closer to:

42,000 miles/ 17mpg=2470 gallons over the course of my lease without a dam.
42,000 miles/ 17.5 mpg=2400 gallons over the course of my lease with a dam (MAYBE).

70 gallons saved with an air dam x $2.79/gallon= $195 saved over the course of my lease.

Now factor in the purchase of the dam, hassle of having to modify it to fit my truck, and having to take it off in the winter; I'm gonna go ahead and say I'm not committing much to throw away $100 at best. I spend several times that amount each year on vehicles in free-to-play video games.

Well I took my air dam off my TRD Sport almost immediately. I know it’s there to help fuel mileage but I didn’t buy a truck for fuel mileage. IMO it looks better without it on. Now mine’s just sitting in my basement until I can find a OR owner locally who might want it.

I have this on my tailgate and a un-used roof rack with sticker-bombed fairing. My mpg has improved by 10-15MPG. Originally 18-24. Now around 32-36 depending on if the sun is out or not.

I happen to have a spare air damn(sic). If anyone in mass wants to add one let me know!

I am a certified road roller and wagon trail driver, not really an off roader per se, but I left mine on for now

i wouldn't mind trying it. i drive 120/day highway so it'd be nice to see if it actually improves mileage.

OR guys would need the clips and screws right?

I can’t remember if it had clips, but there were quite a few screws. The screws aren’t necessary if you don’t have the dam so if you get it from a Sport owner just ask for all their screws

Sometimes when I'm in a good positive mood I will log onto Tacomaworld just to bring myself back into a negative mood. Just once, just one time...I wish I would come on here and see like a thread about some guy who back halfed his truck for a 4link setup and is wondering what valving he needs to run in his 3.5” quadruple bypass shocks.

    anyways

Damn dude, should you put an air dam on your off-road pickup truck? I don’t know mate, it might void the warranty… But could be worth it with all that dough you’ll be saving at the pump….I say screw the nay sayers and slap that bitch on. What’s life without a little risk?

    Lots of sail boat fuel
That's over the life of the truck. Even doubling that and putting it at 10 years, that's $150 a year. Or less than $13 a month. Or $2.88 a week.

    That's splitting hairs.

Not to bust your chops too hard, but what do you mean "keep it stock and never use it as a truck". My 2010 DCLB is as stock as it comes but I regularly load the bed with gear, dirt, mulch, firewood and other such crap. I also pull trailers and stumps and strangers out of ditches. In the crappy midwest weather where I live, I'll frequently drop it into 4x4 to get through snow drifts, sandy side roads and when assisting previously mentioned strangers out of ditches.

At what point in all of this is my "stock" truck not being a truck? ;)

It is absolutely not because we don’t use our trucks as trucks. It’s 100% due to EPA mileage regulations. And it will get worse.
Don’t blame Toyota for the 3.5 it’s all law makers and the EPA. All manufacturers are trying to stay ahead of the curve, most are failing.
I believe by 2025 manufacturers fleet average is 54 MPG.
Think the 3.5 sucks, wait until 2025.

    As to the chin strap.
I put one on my off road for no other reason than a experiment, at 10,000 miles. Picked up 1 MPG around town and 2ish on the interstate. Interstate stability also improved.
You can choose to believe it or not and would add that I expected no mileage improvement.
I did it after reading the last thread on this subject and......am weird like that.
Personally the lower front bumper area is equally ugly with or without the chin strap, at least on my truck.

I have no doubt MPG increases with the spoiler.
But I'm wondering how you guys *really* know this. Again, no doubt in theory this should be true, but cruising down the highway at whatever speed how are you determining this? It's not an accusation, more curious. I can't imagine a fella running a timed slalom between stopped cars at rush hour, you know? Is it steering "feel", wandering, etc? The amount of downforce a chin spoiler should impart on a pickup truck at highway speed is marginal compared to NASCAR, is what I mean.

I should mention I'm one of the dorks without a sway bar, lifted on softish springs, camper with a higher center of mass and an even more brick-like profile (probably even with some airfoil effect working to unweight it slightly) due to skid plates and an ARB. So I've turned a reasonably decent handling truck into a significantly worse highway truck... Even though the truck will do 75, 80 MPH I just don't. The sucker leans and changes lanes in a mildly stuff cross breeze.

    11 clips and 11 screws.
(Toyota part numbers 90183-06019 and 90080-15091). Check online and shop around as the prices can vary widely

Most people who sell them give you the hardware too. They won’t need it once they remove the chin spoiler.

    Nothing super scientific.
I didn’t try the chin strap until 10,000 miles so have a pretty good indication of what the truck will do mileage wise. I’ve checked it on the same stretch of interstate I run once a week. Never could get over 18.3. Now I’m seeing 20.

The bean counters have a lot of pull with manufacturers. If Toyota could save one dollar a truck for something not needed do you think they would eliminate it?
The only reason it’s not on the OR and on every other truck is for a higher approach angle.
How much could Toyota save a year if it was not included on every truck they sold?

I’m not trying to convince anyone to use the chin strap.
Like I said, only did it out of my own curiosity.

    Misread your quote.
I never liked the way this truck wanders on the interstate. I’ve tried different alignment specs and tire pressures. With no real change. The strap definitely made a difference, not huge but it’s there.
Also the strap does not increase downforce. It creates less drag on the undercarriage and air hitting the front tires. Dirty air Causes instability.

I took off the air dam on my ‘17 TRD Sport, but reinstalled it after a few days or so because I liked the look better with it on. I also felt more turbulence at highway speeds without the air dam. Maybe it was all in my head.

I never even thought to install the air dam on my ‘18 TRD Off Road.

As for my current ‘19 SR, I don’t have any intentions of removing it.

The warranty department strikes again! Hilarious!

I’d buy one for $100 but no more. Not worth it. They list new for about $200 to my door.
