I thought the same when I did intake changes before. It took actually taking my mods to the dyno to realise how little a difference it makes. Fuel and ignition tuning makes a bigger difference, unless you take intake/exhaust pulse tuning into effect and make custom length runners

When ramming a brick through air, it takes a lot to really make a significant difference. I'll not be putting LBR on a Dyno, but I will say that the simplest, non-invasive things you can to are intake, exhaust, and reducing the rotating weight. The K&N did #1, and the EFan did #3. Due to "noise", I probably won't tackle #2. These two changes alone do make the engine feel more responsive, can't say after 3 fill ups that any significant improvements in MPG will take place, but I do expect that I have given her another long term lease on life in the engine bay!

well the more power you start with when you when you began the easier it is to game big numbers with small mods for example if you take like a d16 out of a Honda Civic that's rated at 1:30 I didn't cold air intake will only give you like a 3 horsepower increase compared to if you had like a Shelby GT500 with 500 horsepower adding a cold air intake would give you like 30 40 horsepower

I did a lot of engine upgrades on modern engines, and you're looking at a 5-10% best case improvement in power with intake and exhaust. You need to couple it with either cam, cam and heads, or cam and engine tuning. Factories tune their engines to run on the leaner side of the middle of the range AFR (air:fuel ratio) without running too hot, in order to improve total combusted fuel without raising heat to the point of increasing NOx emissions.

it's more the year range of the specific model. Intake and exhaust on a '94 LT1 Chevy could get you a much a 50-75 hp, with the LS1 you would see closer to 35-50

True all that! Unless you are "building an engine", best to stay on the fringe of what the engine will respond to without pain. K&N and fan may never "pay for themselves", but they certainly won't cost like 35's and armor!
Like always, HP = cubic dollars, but you can't change a brick!

Very true. The horsepower to dollar ratio on vehicles like the taco I couldn't ever justify power mods, unless you went all the way.

Not the way it works, not without specific fuel and ignition tuning changes with higher octane fuel to reduce knock or ping

I still don't understand how the engine of a 96 to 99 Mitsubishi eclipse can make more power than a whole bunch of the V8s during the same time

    Turbo=higher volumetric efficiency

It uses waste energy (exhaust) and converts it into higher intake volume (and heat).

Mods these days are "purpose specific", unless someone if fooling themselves. All the MFGs have spent a fortune in Engineering and R&D these days, it's not like old "change the sheet metal" days at all. Even my old Hot Rod Magazine uses phrases and components I had never even heard of. What it takes to build a "treasure" these days will cost a bunch, unless you are your own all in one shop!

Simple, and not. Relatable? How can your Prius hit 117?

The thing that tripped me out the most when I was learning modern fuel injected engine building, was how crucial pulse tuning the intake/exhaust runners in combination with displacement and combustion chamber volume with cylinder head flow and air fuel ratios and cam timing.

    It's cool AF lol

Edit: I also blueprinted and built carbeurated small block Chevy powered T-bucket hot rods as part of my education lol

no explain how back before the year 2000 a 400 horsepower car was hard to achieve but now they're getting the thousand horsepower out of all these newer vehicles with just a few add-ons

I remember back if you had like a Camaro SS or trans am ram air that was rated at 325 you had a fast car

It is! If you had a degree and any experience in that alone, you'd be on your way to your 2nd million! Because you have to do that, regardless of what you change outside of it! AND, then you have to know (or expect to know) what those outside changes might do! Really odd, but F1 really started driving this, and then KERS. And previous Pres. MPG CAFE goals to be met, as MFG you KNEW you needed all this. Wish I was young sometimes.!

That's not how it works at all. Cam+Exhaust+Intake+Tuning=high power for the platform. It's all about everything being tuned and designed to work a certain way.

I've thought about getting back into it, but I need to start entry level and review as over a decade in the army had made my mind forgetful.

I've built several 800+ hp cars that ran on 87 octane back in 2002
