It’s because a holes refuse to pick up their dogs shit. Period. It sucks. It also sucks when you and your dog are obeying the leash laws and encounter others that aren’t. People suck and don’t think the rules apply to themselves.

Dude. Seriously. That’s the bullshit excuse they use. I’ve been dealing with it for decades. They also say dogs are more harmful to ecologically fragile environments as they can “scare” the natural inhabitants. Try walking your dog in a public park on the peninsula. It’s damn near impossible to find more than three parks in all the entirety of San Mateo County that will allow you to walk your dog.

Plus, the Equestrian crowd has more money to buy their legislators.

I used to train and was certified for CARDA. The amount of legal spaces we could use was very limited. Fortunately, there are a lot of generous landowners who see the value in having well trained/certified S&R dogs to help with national emergencies.

I still don’t understand why you are taking a combative stance in your response to me. We are on the same side here.

A horses diet also consist of grain. Most dogs diet consist of proteins, which take longer to biologically break down. This is why State/National Parks have very strict rules on where you can take your dogs.

I agree. It’s a parts per million issue to me. Horses drop a helluva lot more shit than a dog. Problem is, there a lot more dog owners that want access than horse owners that do have access.

If we are speaking beaches (concept applies elsewhere too) and the immediately adjacent uplands it's not the dog shit, it is that a small percentage of off leashed dogs with careless owners have been documented causing take of endangered bird nests (nest failure via abandonment or destruction due to dogs) or take of other endangered species at a multitude of sites. USFWS has done legit studies (I've read some of the research) where they quantified the impacts using remote sensing cameras at the sites and pedestrian monitoring. From an endangered species recovery standpoint, population dynamics statistics projected overtime, if those impacts were not mitigated some populations would wink out. It is important to note these studies were all done on beaches that required leashes and had smaller designated no dog areas within the beach, but of course careless dog owners (small percentage of all dog owners) didn't comply with the rules and broke federal/state statutes such as federal and state endangered species acts, migratory bird treaty act, California fish and game code, etc...

I do not want to start a debate, but have some knowledge on the subject so wanted to provide my slightly informed understanding (do this kind of thing for a living, wildlife bio . Regulatory compliance.. blah blah).

Basically if you allow only leashed dogs and even with designated protected areas (no dogs) some fuckers will always brake the rules. Therefore they had to prevent all dogs. There mission is endangered species recovery, not recreation.

I am a rottweiler guy and love dogs, fyi. But I HATE careless dog owners who dont train their dogs, cannot control their dogs, and brake the rules, which fucks over the rest of us responsible dog owners.
