Are you experienced driving off road? Know how to buddy and recover? Know how you use all the gee whiz electro buttons you've read about in the owners manual? All that is #1

    Drive it as is.

Improve the tires if you find they don't work for your typical terrain.

Then make changes to deal with functional issues you have. Most people spend way more money that needed for how they use the vehicle. But it looks good at the mall.

They've been composite since '05. Very slippery. Which can help sometimes, hurt others. I went with the mat and remove it when I need to slide a heavier non damaging load, like a 200# box.

CWBill: very good considerations! I have some experience—owned two Jeep Cherokees back in the day driving mostly dry hills in central Washington. This thing obviously has all kinds of wizardry that I couldn’t have conceived of then, and while I have read up on it, haven’t had a chance to use it yet. Recovery includes a high lift, shovel, and tow strap along with a buddy’s winch. Plans include trips back to central WA, Oregon dunes, Eastern Oregon, Canyonlands national park, and Sedona. Plan to do more ‘overlanding’ than rockcrawling, but I would like to keep the rig protected. If there are any items you find essential while out there, I’d love to hear about them. Thank for you thoughts.

Sliders and skids have been the most truck saving things I've done followed by tires then lift.

I love the traction aids the Tacoma has. These trucks are surprisingly unstoppable.

The way to tag someone on this forum is like @taco kai

I would not have seen your response with the CWBill if I had not happened to have looked at the thread again.

Might help you connect with someone in future threads.
