Hitch Question

I got this ball mount and I put it in the hitch. The hole doesn't line up. Is it ok to drill it out or is that not safe?

 

Why does it not line up? Is your hitch bent?

 

It doesn't go in far enough to line up. The outside part hits before the hole lines up.

 

Getting a ball mount that fits properly would be easiest.

It would not be easy to drill that out using a hand drill, and as it doesn’t line up, attempting to drill it while left in place would probably cause the outer hole of the hitch to become larger and oddly shaped.
Something the guy with the unique haircut might attempt!

 

Can you make some adjustments to the mount with a grinder?

 

It took me a minute to get over the optical illusion in the photo, I thought you just had to back out the ball mount a bit, but I see what youre saying now. I wouldnt grind or drill, just go buy a curt ball mount for 20 bucks and be done with it. 20 bucks is way better ( and safer!) than toasting a nice drill bit trying to kludge that one into place.

Thats a class 3 draw bar in a class 4 receiver. Get the proper draw bar.

 

Go buy one that fits and be safe. I'm normally a guy who will hammer to fit and paint to match. On a receiver it's important to have proper fitment. If the pin isn't in there square it could cause a point load which should shear your pin. Imagine pulling a trailer at 70mph and hitting a bump and all of a sudden you're not pulling a trailer anymore.

 

As @daddy_o said, get the proper hitch. You certainly can't enlarge the current hole as this will give you an oval hole that will allow movement and eventually shear the pin.

 

Rock Lobster - Thanks for the CURT tip! I've been wondering what to get for my 2019 ORAC. Can't beat that price with the ball included. Now I need to figure out if I need more than 2" drop. The OR hitch is up in the air a bit and I am pulling a homemade utility trailer. That will be easy enough to figure out. Score another win for me on Tacoma Forum.

 

No problem. I'm sure you know, but its super easy to calculate - level the trailer, measure ground to tongue (or just slightly below, depending on where the base of the ball would be), then ground to the top of the truck hitch.

My trailer is a freak of nature, I wound up needing a 2 inch rise. Talk about a shin basher...

 

I thought it would not be smart to drill it... sometimes you need to be told "don't be a dope!"

 

I've got probably four different setups; 2", 1 7/8", 2" drop, 2" longer tongue (need every bit to get the boat in the water and the truck out).
