I really only tried because a friend gave me a secondhand set of pedals, and for shoes, between REI's return policy and the hot secondhand market, I could get my money back pretty easy.

I’m either the most frugal of all the clipless riders here, or I just run the most budget/entry level setup known to man. I’m all in for just over $100, if I remember the prices below.

Shimano somethingorother model shoes - ~$60 shipped from Jenson several years ago
Crank Bros. Candy pedals (cheapest model that matched my bike color) - ~$50 shipped from Jenson several years ago

Just sold my Stache with plans to replace it with a short travel 29er as I can only run a one bike stable these days. But for some reason I keep debating getting a Chameleon.

Anyone have any tips for how to make a Thule T2 classic rack more secure when "offroad"? I find the bike can bounce out of the front wheel holder.

Cam strap of some kind, similar to the rear? I don’t have that rack so not terribly familiar with it’s design/construction

What I like about being clipped in when going though uphill techy stuff is that it forces me to power through the rocks. At least that’s the case for me. I mean you could stop and fall over but who wants to do that? Lol

yeah, I found out yesterday that I can easily get my right leg out, but apparently my left leg I am not as coordinated with. Gonna be an interesting experience on Gooseberry next weekend.

So can someone help me understand road bike sizes? I'm 6 foot, and ride a 19.5 mtb frame. That translates to 50 cm, but a lot of gravel bike charts say that I fit a 58cm frame. Does that make any sense?

I have a similar issue. My left ankle has some residual scarring and arthritis from an old sprain injury that I never had treated. Now, I have reduced ROM in that ankle and twisting out of my pedals on the left side has to have some forethought/planning. Interestingly, I've compensated by improving my mountain stand time to be able to pivot or change my COG to allow me to clip out on the right. Doesn't always work... but more often than not.

I have been known to lean into a cliff side on the left if I couldn't clip out fast enough and there was a drop on the right that would have left me tumbling had I clipped out on that side. Ever plant your helmet and knee into a cliff wall and feel like a turtle on its back because you're stuck for a moment? Asking for a friend... :anonymous:

Two words; Reach and Stack... those two will help translate your body measurements to more modern road/gravel frames. Especially those with sloping top tubes where the ETT and other frame dimensions get confusing and overwhelming. Some manufacturers size their frames according to ETT (Effective Top Tube length) while others size according to ST (Seat Tube).. and even with ST measurements for any bike frame; you have to be clear if they are stating Center of BB to center of intersection between Top Tube and ST or to the top of the ST.

FWIW; I'm 5'10 and ride large MTB frames and 55 or 56cm road/gravel frames. Have ridden up to a 58 comfortably but never down to a 54.

Start here for a good, self-guided, measurement tool.

Anyone need a dropper post? I havent taken it off my bike yet, but I have a SDG Tellis that I am looking to get rid of. Comes with the remote, its got about 2 months of use on it. Its perfect. The only reason im replacing is I got a Fox factory transfer for an obscene deal. I wanted the bling bling. The Tellis has been so perfect, if the fox dropper doesnt work as good im going to be pissed. lol

The Tellis is fully servicable on the cheap with lots of support on their website.

Do they do the measurement differently or why the disparity?

I’m 5 11 and ride a 19.5” trek, I’ve got a 58cm CX that is almost too big for me so 58 is probably good for you.

As you know every bike manufacturer has slightly different sizing. I'm 5'11 1/2" and on most mountain bikes i'm a large but sometimes a medium fits me better. With road bikes i usually ride a 56cm but I have a 54cm surly cross check that fits me like a glove. Find out which road bike you want to go with a test ride couple sizes. If that's not possible google "bike x" sizing and i'm sure you'll come across a few forums where people discuss sizing.
