Quality is never a 100% objective; customer perceptions always play a big part in it.

JD Power makes detailed breakdowns available to automakers on a subscription basis. Toyota, GM, Ford and all major automakers buy it.

BTW, JD Power ratings are a LOT more market representative than Consumer Reports: JD Power surveys a random sample of each model sold. Consumer Reports' methodology on the other hand would fail a Stats 101 class.

The important thing here, is the Tacoma comes with a stick shift and the Ranger doesn't

I think the choice is clear

The Tacoma's stick is pretty crappy and the clutch's/throwout bearings tend to grenade around 50k miles (mine too). The only other car I've ever done a clutch on, in 15 years of driving stick, was a 1993 Geo Metro with almost 200k miles on the original clutch. So yeah, better save up 2k for that clutch job.

I have a 2017 6MT. I had to install a URD short-throw before it was even tolerable, and it's very clunky. There are multiple examples of toasted clutches and throwout bearings around 50k on this very forum. The Toyota 6-speeds are well known for being overly sensitive. URD even has a retrofit kit to install a Tremec 6-speed in 2nd gen Tacomas.

My 16 Tacoma has been bullet proof aside from a blower motor that crapped out.

You certainly behave like a dealer employee, if I might mention that. I've only had one clutch replaced in my whole lifetime. I've driven several stick Subaru's over 100k (until the cars were totaled in crashes). This is the first stick I own that is presenting any sort of transmission problems at this mileage. And wouldn't you know it, many complaints about 6 speed Toyota transmissions spanning over a decade.

Okay I have never had to replace a clutch, adjusted yes, replaced NO - on multiple vehicles cars that have gone over 100k. Maybe you are just hard on clutches? As I said, This Tacoma MT is smooth and still feels great at 39k and yes I actually use the truck to do more than just commute. Tow, haul, pull folks out, a bit of offroad, etc.... This clutch is strong and so are the other MT Taco's in the family. Again, calling BS.

Hey, my clutch was fine at 39k too. Now I am at 52k, it was slipping up a steep hill at 50k. Vibration in the pedal that started recently. No, I am not hard on clutches. I've only replaced only one clutch in my life at almost 200k miles. Had multiple clutches go over 100k miles. Again, stop drinking the Kool Aid. There are many reports on the 6MT's crappy stock clutch and throwout bearing, and Toyota's 6 speed's have had TSB's and issues for over a decade. Public knowledge.

The gear box is completely new for the 3rd generation Tacoma. Also has a different clutch. You're thinking of the 2nd generation gear box and clutch with the throw out bearing issues. Link some issues from a 3rd generation Tacoma with a throwout bearing problem. Where are they? Hasn't even been out for a "decade"
