so I just spent a few hours doing a valve cover gasket replacement and replaced cylinder 5 injector. Got everything tightened down, no left over bolts, don’t see or feel any loose wire plugs or hoses.

Truck wants to start, sputters, but won’t fire. I have to turn the key all the way off between tries, and it sputters. And I have an electrical wine on the passenger side of the bay only when key is “on”.

    It’s been a long day...help!

Don’t think so, think they’re all their own unique plugs

Is the air intake tract all nice and tight between the MAF and the intake?

This would be my next guess, a big vacuum leak will prevent it from starting especially one coming from a line that is completely unconnected or uncapped

When I try to start it, it sputters. If I leave the key in the ON position I have an electrical hum that seems to be related to this plug in the throttle body. If I unplug it the electrical hum goes away a couple seconds later.

Try removing the throttle body and inspecting it and associated parts right there. That hum you describe makes me think of a small electrical motor that is stuck or something. Can you tell if gas is getting to the cylinders? What about spark?

    OME and worth every penny.
It sputters. I guess it's getting both.
Maybe not at the right time though, the injector wires CAN be mixed up or plug wires.

If you're SURE you reconnected the fuel line?

edit: BTW, what year is it.

that whine is an electrical whine... something isnt grounded properly. first place to check is the gang ground at the upper intake manifold. Dont just check the tightness of the bolt, take the bolt off and clean the ring terminal, bolt, bolt hole and manifold. Take the bolt and thread it in the hole and make sure it doesnt bottom out, a bolt can "feel" tight and not do its job. Then check the ground off the back of the head to the firewall, do the same thing, then the ground from the inner fenderwell by the battery then the battery negative connection on the block. All of the fuel injection / ignition grounds from the PCM are grounded at the intake manifold connection.

Did you put a new injector in? It could be dumping fuel if it is bad. Also it could be a big vacuum leak l, intake not seated correctly. Try starting it with wide open throttle.

Throwing any codes? Disconnect battery to reset any weird hiccups in electrical system. Is the #5 injector the correct impedance?

Ok so now got a code reader on it I’m getting
P0305 cylinder 5 misfire (why I replaced the injector)

P0101 mass or volume air flow circuit range/performance

P0442 evaporative emission system leak detected (small leak)

I do have some bad hoses but they were like that before I worked on it. PCV valve hose is pretty cracked and so is the one coming off the big square black box on the air intake tube. But they seem to slide on far enough past the cracked ends.

    It’s a 2003

Did you plug the injector in? You could swap coils to see if the misfire follows to rule out the coil. But that usually is something you want to do when the truck is runming.

Yup, injector is plugged in. Can’t really plug the injectors in wrong based on cable length, and I numbered the coil packs before removing them, also can’t fuck them up because of cable length.

I'd disconnect the battery, check my work again (all wires, hoses, and bolts), reconnect the battery and see what happens.

In my frustration I left the key in the on position last night so it died. Got it charging now, just had enough to toss the scanner on it. Gonna let it charge before disconnecting it
