I had a chance to test out the vvti variance of my revised tune and it seems that I lost a little low end partial throttle power. I mean it still is a lot better than stock, but not better than the revised 2nd tune you gave me. The difference could be felt at cruising speed while climbing up a long hill on the freeway in 6th gear. With the vvti tune, the truck lost some speed (normal for that hill) and I had to give it a fair bit more throttle to keep speed compared to the previous tune.
I flashed back to the previous tune and can confirm that my truck likes that one better.
I'm curious to see what the other people's experience running that vvti variance of the tune is.

Interesting. Were you doing any logging around that time to see if you were in an area that was actually changed?

Appreciate the feedback! The changes to the VVTi were minor and in very select regions. I was not able to tell a difference myself but I’d been making a lot of pulls with my truck and my dyno was getting a little desensitized ;)

A log as mentioned would be helpful, to see if you were in regions of the map with altered cam advance. If you were going up hill in 6th I’m pretty certain you wouldn’t have been in the affected zone, but before I speculate too much, the datalog would say for sure.

All feedback is good so thank you!

Ah, okay. Maybe it's all in my mind. What type of scenario does this vvti change effect?

No, did not do any datalogs when using that tune. Maybe it's my driving style, but my truck just feels better on the tune without.

You can see for yourself exactly where the changes occur. Open up the justdsm tune with the vvti changes, then open up a compare file of either the previous non changed vvti tune or stock tune. Then head to engine , airflow and variable valve timing or something of that sort (it will be the only thing highlighted in green due to the differences between the two) and it will visually show you the change amounts as well as where in engine rpms and throttle positions the changes were made. Looking at it, it makes sense what JustDSM did, smoothed out the area for sure. I have been running vvti changes that justdsm came up with and havnt really noticed too much difference over the original justdsm tune, that stated i have not had much at all time with them.

Also @JustDSM Am i correct in thinking that the changes in VVTi wont affect fuel trims? That is, we dont have to give the ecu some time to trim the changed vvti areas (Due to the fact that increased airflow will change fueling from the maf side of things?)

Generally speaking cam changes to the degree we're making them won't affect the fueling requirements of the motor. Ignition timing correction, yes, and there is a map for that.

These are the degrees of advance I added/subtracted from the stock VVTi map.

I see. Forgive me if I'm interpreting that graph wrong. That looks to be about the same conditions as the hill the truck was climbing in 6th. Enough load to switch to open loop. Before any of the tunes my truck would lose speed and could barely hold speed on the hill floored. I'm at about 2400 - 2500 rpm in 6th cruising at 65 mph.

Again, this could all be in my head and I could be completely wrong.

    @JustDSM

If you want me to datalog this for you, no problem. But that revised tune my truck is currently running is so good, I really don't see a need for me to try and flash anything different.

What did you do with the hole in the intake box?

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
I would pick it up on a heartbeat. I have a Hobart MIG pictured there beside the TIG that works great, but would really like to match my TIG with a 211 MVP or 215. Ever get to the east coast?

Edit: Nevermind, I am looking for a 211 Millermatic. I see the 215 only does DC TIG.

Hole in the airbox? One is for the crankcase breather and the other for the FPR. Both are plumbed exactly back to OEM locations. I still run a modified stock airbox fed directly with the Volant scoop.

Disregard, I thought you had a Volant airbox like me. That has the pump integrated in the box and leaves a hole that needs a cover.

I decided to sell the intake in the classifieds and have gone back to stock. I plan on doing a carbon fiber/silicon elbow to clean up the corrugated stock intake pipe but am having a hard time finding 4" carbon tube with the right bends if anyone has a source.

Also, I haven't driven much on the updated VVTi tune (I'll call it JustDSM Tune 2.01) so was going to hold back on commenting, but the little I have driven (~120 miles), it down shifted to 3rd @60mph again on the big hill both times I went up, where it would just barely hold 4th with the JustDSM 2.0 tune that was flashed before it. That said, it runs really well everywhere else and am pleased with it overall. There's just too many variables on my Dyno Hill to say one way or the other so I'd like to run both tunes on it while logging data, but haven't done so yet.
