How can I tell if I have Blind Spot Monitoring on my 2016 TRD Sport?

I have a button labeled BSM, but when I push it nothing lights up with the engine running in park, or driving- not even briefly. I see the icons on the side view mirrors. I'm wondering if its not working, or maybe I just don't HAVE that option. According to my Vin, here's a summary of what this 3 year old vehicle came with. Oh- by the way it's a 2016 TRD Sport 4x4 with Access Cab, 6 cyl:

    • safety & convenience
Rear Backup Camera Star Safety System: incl ABS, VSC & More Dr & Fr Pass Advanced Airbag System Seat-Mounted Side & Side Curtain Airbags 3-Pt Seatbelts for All Seating Positions Side-impact Door Beams Tire Pressure Monitor Sys w/Auto Locate
    • What the heck does "Dr & Fr Pass Advanced" mean? Pertaining to the airbags???

Do you have an owners manual? I would start there.

If you have the four round sensors in the rear bumper, then you got it.

BSM doesn’t work with aftermarket rear bumpers, is yours a stock rear bumper? Other than that, when you pass a car, or a car passes you does the Icon light up on the mirror? That’s all BSM is.
Same sensors are used for cross traffic monitoring, put it in reverse close to another vehicle and you should see a indicator on the dash plus a beep. But there are no visible indicators it’s on, except the light on the button that turns it on and off.

You’re referencing the ultrasonic sensors (aka parking assist sensors), not sure if that is a default system for BSM to be installed... the actual BSM sensors are behind the bumper caps:

The side mirrors should light up when YOU USE THE TURN SIGNAL and a vehicle is in your blind spot.

If there is a vehicle in your blind spot, the BSM button is on and the icons on the mirrors are not lighting up when you signal then there’s something not working.

Not exactly... if the BSM detects a vehicle, the symbol on the mirror will light up, if then turn signal is activated, the that light will flash:

Kind’a made it sound like the turn signal had to be ON for the light to illuminate...

Well if you “activate the turn signals” and the turn signals don’t come on, then there’s something else not working besides the BSM...LOL

Thanks for all the info. I DO have four round sensors/caps in the rear bumper, and as far as I can tell I have the stock bumper. I really think the key to this is that the BSM button indicator below the dash does NOT LIGHT UP AT ALL WHEN DEPRESSED, so I think there is a definite problem. The side view mirrors DO light up with the directionals. I just picked this vehicle up Monday, May 6th. I was told by the dealer as a pre owned certified vehicle I have a 12 months 10K bumper to bumper coverage, so I guess I'll let them figure it out. I just wanted to be sure I HAD this option before I brought it in.

I can't remember if there is a light on the button or not right now, but I do know it will give you a message on the gauge cluster screen when you push it and it does take some time for it to boot up.

One way to test at home would be put it in reverse in your driveway and have some one drive by behind you. You'll get a beep from the cross traffic alert which uses the same sensors.

Thanks, I'll try that before I take it to the dealer. It's curious from some papers I found in the glove compartment from the previous owner that HE complained a couple of years ago, when the truck was only 1 year old, that the BSM was coming on, and then stayed off, and the dealer under warranty replaced the No. 3 Frame Harness. VELLLLLLY INTERESTING, NO???

I’m not in my Tacoma at the moment but I thought Parking Assist and BSM were two different things. No?

When I backup out of my garage the Parking Assist sensors beep until I cross the threshold; BSM is a separate switch. But I could be wrong. My Tacoma beeps so much I lose track of what buttons does what.

Speaking of which: when I signal my Fiat 124 Spider beeps to warn me whenever the BSM senses a vehicle in my blind spot. That’s the one beeping my Tacoma doesn’t do I wish it did.

I'm as confused as you are. I'm having the Toyota salesman look at my vehicle personally. We got to be good buddies because he bought my old UNRELIABLE 1988 Ford Ranger! UGHHH! Nevertheless, that wonderfully HUGE picture you displayed shows the magic BSM button, and I can definitely see the little LED on the button. Mine NEVER LIGHTS- not even momentarily, when I push it on, whether the vehicle is running, or just in the Ignition On position.

Yeah, something's wrong. As mentioned previously, the previous owner probably pulled the fuse.

When you press the button to activate the system, the light in the button illuminates and remains lit while the system is on. The indicators in each side mirror will briefly illuminate while the system boots. The multi-display in the gauge cluster also displays a message for a few seconds. The fact that it does nothing at all when you press the button suggests no power to the system, so likely a blown or missing fuse. I'd start there.

Dealer time. The BSM system is "touchy" as hell. Slush getting up in the left rear is one. Mine was F'd from Texas..... They finally got it going 8 months after I bot it.

Good luck. They had to replace a part of the wiring harness in the left rear sensor area. Worked ever since.

    I've got a Sport TRD 2016 4X4....

Those are the parking sensors. The BSM sensors are the two big boxy things underneath the plastic bumper covers on either side of the rear bumper.

Anyhow, it sounds like it's broken or disabled. Did you get it used? Maybe the previous owner got into an accident and just disabled it rather than repairing/recalibrating the sensors. If you have the button and the lights on your mirrors then it clearly came with the truck originally.
