TSS Recall -- New document from Toyota regarding trucks with "Pro" grills or lifts

Any Toyota can service I’ve gotten mine done at 2 others outside the dealer I bought from

 

The day has come when even your truck tells you what to do:

 

Wow. So if for some reason a modded Tacoma with a faulty tss sensor suddenly brakes and caused a fatal accident, Toyota is basically off the hook once you sign the waiver. Bummer. Glad mine doesn’t have that tss thing.

 

Can’t blame Toyota for being cautious after the unintended acceleration fiasco.

Having said that, Toyota shouldn’t introduce features knowing well that Tacoma owners heavily customize their trucks. To try to put a patch after the fact that limits customers’ ability to customize their trucks doesn’t leave Toyota looking any better.

This wouldn’t be so much of an issue if Toyota hadn’t put such hideous grille on the truck to start with.

 

That's the most stupid and cheapest remedy I ever seen. There is NO guarantees that dirt, water etc will get to the TSS still. They should be replacing the whole thing with a new one without covering it with a cushion(?). Now, Toyota advertise "Off Road" on their trucks but the expectation is for you to drive it on paved roads. I wish I had the time to get into a legal matter.
P.S. This is not a Toyota thing btw, I have a bunch of Jeep Wrangler friends that are going thru the same stupidity as well.
What bothers me the most if the false advertisement, period.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Taco and have no issues with my 2018 Sport, it seems like ALL vehicles are heading this route tho.

 

Ha, I read that disclaimer and thought "So, they are giving the owner a way to turn off stupid nanny crap?" I like the sound of that.

 

I talked to the service manager at my servicing dealer who is a friend and he informed me that our trucks are set to turn on the TSS each time the truck is turned on even of we manually turned the system off before shutting down the truck. This procedure would turn this feature off. So if we manually turn off the TSS it will not automatically turn on each time the truck is started, it will however save the last setting. So if you have this procedure and turn on TSS, it will be activated when you turn on your truck. If you manually turn off TSS, the next time you turn on your truck TSS will be off. Hope this helps.

He said he would not be comfortable doing the recall unless everything was stock as he does not want any liability coming back on him or the dealerships. I cannot blame him. I scheduled the recall before this was an option so when I brought in my truck I changed out the grille and then switched it back after the recall was done.

 

It’s not Communism, I think you need to look that up. It is all about liability and the ability for people to sue for anything these days.

 

I’m so glad I had my recall completed already... Toyota of Gladstone does a great service for folks that have modified trucks. Mine is lifted with Pro grill and I wasn’t hassled whatsoever. I’d highly recommend!

 

Did you experienced a sticky mess removing the "cushion" from the stock grille to the PRO?

 

The service manager (my friend) new what I was planning to do and had the foam pad only stuck to the sensor not the grille, so it was a breeze. The pro grille encases the sensor quite a bit better than the OR grille too.

 

In the 1980s Chrysler had a fix like this. The seam sealer would crack and leak into the passenger foot well. That's where the logic module was (ECM). Rather than fix the leak, the recall wrapped the LM in a plastic bag. Problem solved. That's why so many old Dodge/Chrysler cars have rotten floors.

 

So I called another dealer, and set up an appointment. At the end he goes "well looks like you also need a recall done" lol. Oh well. Sounds like I can still enable the stuff if I want to.

 

Would it help to go talk to the guys in the back to make sure they do it? Not sure if thats a thing or not, to talk to the technicians directly. Maybe offer something to $weeten the deal...

 

Or just take my chances that they will just do it. I'm not massively lifted or anything so maybe they will just do it. IDK. At this point as long as they don't permanently disable it or anything it seems I can just reverse it. Unless I'm wrong.

 

I took mine in to the dealer near me, they had it for 15 minutes then "had to order a part."That was a couple weeks ago. Just got the call today its in, so we'll see Friday if they reject it or not.

 

I actually just bought an OffRoad with a lift and the 17" TRD wheels with KO2 tires about a week ago. I did a recall search on my VIN and there isn't any right now, so either Toyota did the recall before they released the vehicle to me, mine doesn't need one, or the recall is on its way. I am unsure on what they will say about my lift and wheels considering they sold it to me with that package included and didn't say anything about the recall, in which i had no idea about.

I also bought the TRD Pro Grille with raptor lights from running 4 Tacos and was going to install this weekend, but now I'm wondering if I should wait and see if my vehicle senser is going to get recalled. My concern would be if they patched it and I wasn't able to switch the grill out afterwards, but it sounds like you are able too.

This sucks I just got my Toyota came on to this site to see what you guys do with yours and see this thread about the senser recall issue with modified trucks and now don't know what to think.

I certainly don't blame the dealers for not wanting to do the recall's on modified trucks, but I'm going to be upset if mine is gets recalled and there are issues considering they sold it to me like that and didn't say anything about a possible recall issue with a modified Tacoma.

 

alrighty everyone... lifted my 2018 taco offroad 6" with 35s and have a aftermarket bumper, put the bumper on before the lift and had the tss problem and just keeps coming up over and over.. got the lift with out getting the sensor recalibrated and now they say its the lifts problem and they wont even deal with the issue on the tss. all i want is to beable to not use the tss cancel it out and beable to use my cruise control!

 

I actually brought that up to him as there is another dealer close by that sells several SR5s that they modify. He said he wasn’t sure how they would handle that, but thought they may be opening themselves to possible liability. He noted that it is my truck and I can do to it as I wish. However if I do modify it and this causes the TSS to malfunction and not work as designed causing an accident Toyota, the dealer, him, etc. cannot be held liable. I believe that this is the purpose of the tracking waiver. You can modify your truck, but can’t hold anyone liable if a safety feature doesn’t work as designed once modified.

 

Yea I definitely do. Looked when I got home from work and it appears they already put that black neoprene or whatever patch on it.

Dammit anyways, now I'm going to have to figure out how to get that off without ripping the patch because it looks like they glued it on to the inside part of the grill.
