    Howdy guys,

Just curious to hear how others drive their Tacos when going uphill? Personally, I've been trying out both ECT Power and S mode to see what works best (I've got an AT). I'm sure depending on the grade some might use both simultaneously. Anyways, feel free to chime in with your preferred method and why.

    Cheers!

Put it into neutral. Open the door. Unbuckle the seatbelt. Jump out. Truck'll get right up over that hill.

After you guys are done with this, I could use some advice for acceleration techniques on the highway.

I drive up mountain passes daily, this engine pulls way better than my old 2006 4.0 did. All you have to do is have it down shift before you start going up the hill, Just tap the gas pedal. Works for me.

    Hm.

I feel like I should consider a different technique.

I dunno, I think there’s still more conversation to be had about, say, which engine oil is better. Or mysterious noises.

This question will generate a good portion of Shitposts @Johnny77, and perhaps rightfully so.

However, I understand you had a legit question so I’ll give you my legit answer.

In the old days most cars with automatic overdrive transmissions had a button labelled “OD Off”’. What this button did was prevent the vehicle from shifting into its overdrive gears to give more torque/HP when cruising up long hills. “Overdrive” gears are gears where the wheel speed is greater than the engine speed (hence “over” drive). They do not posses the torque required for a steep grade.

Your Tacoma has two overdrive gears, 5th and 6th. If approaching a long ascent it is a good idea to flop the AT shift lever to “S-mode”. S-mode defaults to “S4”. This will prevent the transmission from shifting into 5th or 6th gear, mimicking the exact same behaviour as the old “OD Off” buttons.

This is what I do, out of habit, and it works well for me.
