TSS Recall -- New document from Toyota regarding trucks with "Pro" grills or lifts

I think with the Carista app & OBDII dongle you can default the PCS on & off per key cycles. I'm sure I saw that while looking at the app settings & will check later on that...

OP, WHEN IT FAILS AN CAUSES TROUBLE FOR YOU, sue them. Get you a new truck every September for life, and mod them with the money they pay you. I just had mine done a few weeks back, my dealer didn’t say a word about my mods.

 

Why are people surprised by this? When I bought my truck I actually signed papers saying I gave permission for the dealer to remove the window sticker, and that it was given to me after removal. Another signature was required saying that Toyota provided a mount for a front license plate. These things are because Toyota has had legal issues over insignificant things. If you want to know who has caused this, it's the people driving by you in other Tacomas.

 

I’d just shut it off and go home. Last year and for every year before in your life did you need a sensor to tell you not to run into things.? This is technology for people who can’t drive or pedestrians who can’t walk. In a few years they will figure out a better system that’s not so reliant on a don’t touch methodology, until then don’t drive on the sidewalk.

 

I really hope this is the case because I really like the TSS sensor and I haven't had any issues with an OEM knockoff. Frankly. the photo's I've seen of the fix are really cheezy with that foam piece and some sort of silicon being applied around the sensor. If that's all it is, I'll consider declining the warranty and fashion something myself the keep the crap off of it. And I REALLY don't want some cheesy still thrown on my dash - that will piss me off to no end. Yeah I get there's "legal" issues with declining the warranty or fashioning your own thing, but lawyers will look for the smallest dumbest thing to legally steal your money and then justify taking the lions share of it. I hate lawyers with a passion and there's only one that I'll ever trust.

Its not a recall. Its a Special Service Campaign. Not the same.

The waiver is lawyer work protecting themselves from our litigation frienzed culture when a 'safety feature' may not work as designed because of something we did.

If I was Toyota I'd do the same.

You are free to mod all you wish.

They are free to advise they'll not be responsible for safety features affected by your modifications.

Pretty simple really.

I’m with this guy. Also not sure why you would never take your truck to the dealer for service again over this. It seems like a reasonable move by them to protect themselves.

 

I paid the dealer to do TSS-P front radar calibration with the truck sitting on tires that lift the sensor about 25 mm. Stock grille. I think it was about two hours labour.

I will not take the truck in for the recall until December. If their position is that they won't do the recall without my signing a waiver, I'll demand a refund on the calibration work because it's worthless.

 

Yes. It just won’t automatically turn back on if the ignition is shut down with the TSS system turned off.

So, my wife took my 2018 OR over to the dealership for the 15K mile service last week, and they also performed this new recall for the pre-collision sensor and software update.
I have a PRO grille on there, which the same dealer installed. And they calibrated a pro sensor on it last year. It worked fine as far as I could tell. Until now. Now, after this "update," there is a constant warning message on my center multi-function display indicating a pre-collision system malfunction. Wife noticed immediately when getting in the truck last week, and mentioned the new problem before she drove off but didn't have time to stick around for them to diagnose any further. So I brought it back today and pow-wowed with the service manager there to try to get this resolved. We thought they could just turn off the system (which I don't rely on anyway), and I could sign the bullshit paperwork yada yada. So after an hour of sitting in the waiting room there, while service manager was on the phone with his Toyota rep and trying to have his most senior technician try to turn off all these warnings, I left disappointed with a series of apologies from him and him being ashamed and frustrated that they had no options left it seemed. I have a PRO sensor behind the grill, but the issue seems to be that the software update to the "module" of the computer system tightened the tolerances for the sensor so that it just will not work, setting off these error messages. They were able to turn the PCS to "off," but I am now, it seems, stuck for the rest of my owning this 15K mile truck with the warning between the gauges that can't be shut off, and a flashing "PCS off" indicator on the Tach, and a solid warning light on the speedometer. I feel really discouraged and disappointed, but I'm not going back to the stock grille. I think it looks shitty and I also already spent $700 on this pro grill and install last year. The only other potential fix this service manager is going to look into further for me is to see if we can swap out this module for a PRO spec module, to interface properly with the PRO front sensor which I have. But he didn't seem too optimistic after talking with his rep from Toyota today. And it doesn't sound like the OR model's sensor will work with this grille because it's in a different location, a few inches higher or lower or something.

So, am I missing anything here as to how to remedy this situation, or am I stuck with looking at this (see below pic) for the rest of my time driving this truck?

Frustrated and pissed off and annoyed. Wish I could rewind and never have let them do this recall bullshit.

Why did you get a Pro sensor? Couldn't they just move the sensor from your OR over?

Does anyone know if Toyota is working on a permanent fix for this issue, for both stock and modified trucks? Surely they aren't going to sell 2020's with a piece of neoprene strip over the sensor?
