Odor from 07 A/C

I have an 07 double cab TRD Sport. I bought it with 18 miles on it. Ever since the day I got it, it has had a very sour smell coming from the A/C. If you turn the air flow to outside air (not A/C) there is no smell. I now have 5,000 miles on it. I have taken it to the dealer on two seperate occasions and they are telling me that they can't "replicate" the issue. Then when I leave the dealer it happens again. Does anyone have the same issue?

 

I haven't experienced that. I would come to the dealer with the A/C running, leave it running and get the mechanic and watch him smell and if can't smell anything then I'll find an employ without a stuffed up nose, until I get to the manager if needed...

 

I bought mine in October of 2006 as well. I live in Southern California and you have the A/C on almost every day. I still have the odor after trying to "air it out". I went as far as to remove the cabin filter, spray fabreeze into the filter and the ducts. It is almost like a vinegar smell only not as strong kinda like silicone. Any other suggestions to rid the problem would greatly be appreciated. Craig

i am getting a strange smell from my 07 vents as well.

it started out as a canned peaches smell...as i was told by my kids.
not too unpleasant.

then it started to turn to a musty smell.
it does not matter whether A/C is on or venting from inside or outside.

it is almost as though some water had pooled up somewhere.

definitely coming from vents.
and only when fan is turned on (does not smell funny when air coming through vents without fan on).

FWIW: truck is kept garaged

 

There is a product called Frigi-fresh from BG products that you spray into the ac air intake while the ac is on. It works very well. Also, try turning off your ac about a minute before you get home so the cool air is blown out of the system. The cool air creates moisture in the system which in turn causes mildew and odor. This seems to work on all of my cars. Just a thought.

I know this is an old post. But just for anyone searching for an answer, going forward.

I had the same problem with the musty smell. I had the dealer do an A/C cleaning. Paid about $35. They inject a cleaner into the A/C system. The musty smell is from mold & bacteria. I had it done in 06 for my 05. And I haven't had a problem since.

 

My 2011 Tacoma has a foul sour can't describe smell coming out of defroster! Usually after it has not been driven for a while when the fan gets turned on! You can kinda smell it when it's not running! Any one clues to what this is! I noticed first in the summer now in the cool wet winter! Only 19500 miles and its bugging me!

 

I haven't had this problem,but my wife did in her old Camry. She would leave everything on when turning key off. I told her its good practice to shut things down before. I always turn ac off and then turn fan off before turning key off. Like I said , I haven't experienced this yet in 39k miles.

 

Thanks kolunatic, I usually always shut everything off as well. but will make sure. Seems like if I drive regularly its fine, its only after sitting a while like when I go on vacation a while!

Use of ozium inside with air on recirculate,idle for.awhile. see what that does. Also check cabin filter if ya have one.

 

This is known as "Dirty Sock Syndrome" usually caused by mold and bacteria growing on the evaporator coil and duct lining. As mentioned above his dealer "fogged" the duct system with an antimicrobial agent to kill the source. Home units with easier access can be chemically cleaned fairly easily and there are companies that specialize in duct fogging.

I popped the hood and did find leaves in the cowl and removed them and cleaned the area. today there was no smell, so may it draws in the smell from the outside vents?? Hoping this is the cure!

 

Bingo!

I used a product similar to that in prior cars. It cleans the evaporator coil and drain tube and gets rid of the 'funk' smell and will last for a long while.
