    I'm talking about both kinds, European Pennyroyal and the unrelated American Pennyroyal.
    Here's the American Pennyroyal growing wild in my yard:

    They both smell much the same and are toxic to insects and toxic to animals.
    You wouldn't want to use the concentrated oil on a pet in a place where it can be licked off and ingested.
    So far as I know, the oil you can buy is made from the European Pennyroyal.

    My Mom used to use the essential oil. From the European variety.
    Except for putting a drop between the cats' shoulder blades (where they couldn't lick it)...dunno what else she used it for.
    That's apparently more toxic than I remembered.

    The American Pennyroyal that grows wild hasn't harmed my cats so far as I can see.
    That's rubbing them with the plants, not concentrated oil. Which I dunno if you can even buy.
    I'll often rub some leaves between my fingers just for the smell.
