    Hi,
May be a long shot but I’m looking for a RTT rack that will work with the factory tonneau cover and allow it to still be functional. I’ve found the Voodoo rack that works with tonneau cover but it’s no longer functional.

As a last resort I’ll just sell the tonneau.

    Thanks for any recommendations.

I think you'd best sell the tonneau, because I don't think any decent looking rack could work with the factory tonneau. If you really want a tonneau, you may look into the roll up variety.

Kb voodoo makes tonneau cover brackets that allows you to use any of their higher bed racks with a tonneau cover.

Edit: still not sure if they works with the factory cover. It does work with most aftermarket covers, but I believe the factory cover relocates the track.

But yes, just the raised bed rails by kb voodoo will not allow you to fold up the cover without taking them off.

I believe the only tonneau that is fully operational with a RTT is the Retrax XR series in combination with a Yakima Overhaul or Outpost bed rack.

Yakima says the weight capacity on this setup is 300 lbs.

I initially was looking to retain my tonneau too, but the only option I found was Voodoo. I've heard too many stories about their powder coating, and their customer service was lacking when I attempted to reach out to them. I decided to get rid of my tonneau. In fact, my Relentless Fab bed rack just arrived about 20 minutes ago. I don't think I'll miss the tonneau.

with a 5 foot bed why do you worry about your cover being able to fold over? not like you can't just reach in an grab what you need. if you had a long bed then id understand. even then, im willing to do that just to have my stuff protected by the cover.

I had the KB Voodoo Hi-Rise bed bars. They can be mounted and used with the tonneau, but the tonnuea cannot be opened. That's pretty much the deal with all of the racks that work with a tonneau.

I got rid of my KB Voodoo bed bars for that exact reason. They ended up rusting (badly) within less than a year. I swapped them out for Mobtown and then heavily modified those, to get them to my liking. See below for the story, process and photos...

Not really possible, unless the bed rack is wider than the truck and completely square.

The 300lb limit on the Yakima setups is a dealbreaker. Two adults and a tent would crush that.

    My current plan:
    • RetraxONE XR or Pace Edwards Switchblade cover
    • KB Voodoo Adapters
    • Custom rack

When I was looking at the problem, I decided to have some bed bars created by a local fab shop.

So, when I wanted to use the bars to rack up the kayaks, off comes the factory tonneau.

If I want to haul the motorcycle, off comes the cover.

The rest of the time the tonneau stays on.

The bars I had made would easily accomodate a RTT. Just not at the same time with the cover.

I’d be interested to see what you can come up with. It seems like the retrax tracks are the limiting factor. Both Yakima setups have a 500 lb capacity if mounted directly to the bed, but it’s cut down to 300 lbs if you use the t-slot.

You can see in this picture how little of the track pushes out against the bed railing. The cab side is 5.5” and the tailgate side is 8.5”. If that lip was extended the full length, I’m sure the weight capacity would be higher.

One issue you might run into is where to mount the kbvoodoo adapters. I don’t think they can go against the 2 lips on the tracks or the tracks would be too narrow for the cover to operate.

That's a damn good point. I'm really counting on KB Voodoo to help me with installation/compatibility when it comes to adapter placement -- since they're the ones claiming compatibility with various retractable covers. The design for my custom rack will definitely depend a lot on the adapter placement.

Those adapters reposition the mounting location for the rack to use both a cover and the rack. They will not however allow you to over the cover. The tonneau cover is essentially sandwiched between the brackets.

Edit: i see you are talking retractable cover. I guess that should work so long as you do not relocate the track mount and there is enough remaining space on the track to accomadte the brackets.

Good luck with that. Not sure KB Voodoo is known for their stellar customer service.

im a big fan of modularity as well. i travel with my work gear in the bed all the time, no way can i risk leaving it uncovered on a normal day to day basis. but on weekends, for playtime, i need the ability to carry whatever so this solves those issues.

Yeah, that's the reason I'm looking at retractable covers instead of something solid like the DiamondBack HD. It would frustrate the hell out of me if I couldn't access most of my bed whenever the rack+RTT is installed. That design "flaw" in most builds makes no sense to me at all.

I just went with the Voodoo bars and a soft rollup cover.

Problem solved for about $500. I can use bith at the same time and have no reason to have to remove the bars (unless im hauling something tall, but the bars easily come off and the mounts can stay on all the time).

which cover is that, and does it still roll all the way to the cab with the bars on?

I had a Diamondback SE but sold it for the same reason after Retrax introduced the XR. I currently use Yakima Landing Pads and Round Bars to haul my bikes, but I’m looking for a taller solution that will provide more vertical clearance. Whatever I get, it must utilize the mounting tracks in the Retrax cover...I’m not interested in additional brackets that sit under the cover’s side rails. I think @upTOPoverland will be offering a solution soon.

    Tyger rollup from Amazon.

Yes it rolls all the way up with the bars on. It does take a little more effort to get it through the bar closest to the cab, but not a big deal. You kind of just have to fold it some and pull it past the bar than roll it up.
