I just can’t take the hard shifting much more, it’s driving me crazy! Especially in slow traffic. I’ve got an A340F out of a 97’ 4Runner limited and it randomly wants to shift “hard” from 1st to 2nd. Doesn’t slip out of gear and I’ve had very normal trans temps on long drives as well. I’ve already dropped the trans to fix the torque converter hoping that would help out but no dice. Could it be something relating to the valve body? I still have my old A340E trans, and I would be willing to swap the valve bodies and throttle lines if that would be a possible solution. Otherwise I guess my only other route would be to convert my old one (which I’d rather not have to drop this trans for the 3rd time). Any help?

Are you using the A340F torque converter?

have you adjusted the throttle pressure cable from the throttle body to the transmission?

@Glamisman yes, dozens of times too. Did it per the manual, then too tight, too loose, I’ve tried it in all different positions to no avail. It wasn’t as smooth as my original trans, so I lubed it. Same outcome.

    Solenoids are OK?

damn... hoping for the easy fix.

I think this might explain the issue... maybe.

@Glamisman ive painstakingly read that forum post so many times lol, as far as I know the valve bodies are the same in both my trans.

@BartMaster1234 i have a snapon scanguage we use for work and transmission seems to otherwise be in great shape, no codes and all solenoids work as they should (according to my knowledge using the gauge)

I'm using a 1999 Tacoma A340F in my 1998 Tacoma, and it does shift suddenly from 1st to 2nd. But it's not random, only when you expect it to shift (i.e. accelerating) will you feel it. I attribute that to me re-using the A340E torque converter with a different stall speed.

Haven't we had this conversation about torque converters before?

@BartMaster1234 yep! A few weeks back when I mistakenly put the wrong TQ in there. It definitely helped it out, but hasn’t made the behavior disappear entirely. I would love to go back to the smooth shift the original trans had and I know that’s not impossible...I’m determined to figure this out lol.

You could try swapping the valve bodies.

Really what I'm thinking is solenoids, but I don't know enough about transmissions to make that diagnosis.

valve body differences and issues is what I took away from reading the forum post I linked.
the other bit of info I found interesting in the other post ...

"The only other potential solution would be to pick up a transmission from one of the mid-gen model years, which also have the provisions for the kickdown cable, along with the updated valve body. However, I'm not even sure that would work because there maybe be differences between the solenoids on the two versions of the valve body that would result in compatibility issues with the ECU."

Could it be as simple as swapping solenoids? maybe.

I have Transgo shift kits in each of my Tacomas and before I installed them I tried to get info on exactly what they modified. All I could ever get was that the internal pressures are modified. No help at all. A sharper 1-2 shift was noticable but it was every shift. I see where there are solenoid kits avalible for $75 ish... are they any good. Dont know. I can imagine the frustration and time spent...
