How to Drain/Refill Automatic Transmission

I made one also. This came disassembled and you could solder the connections. Then the case just snapped together.

 

Here is an excellent video on changing the ATF for 2nd gen and it’s made by a hot girl as well.

 

So I can just use Techstream to verify tranny fluid temp instead of using Temp Check mode? (As per Faye Hadley's video)

 

Anyone have a pic or part number for a washer on the overfill check bolt? I did mine today and I guess I forgot to put the washer back on last time.

 

Just use a 7/16" or 3/8" copper crush washer.

Any auto parts store should have some.

 

I've got a couple left over from the DAFs I did a few weeks ago. They might be in the original package. If so, I'll take a pic of the part number later this afternoon

Just got done with a drain and fill. Does it seem right to only have to put in 1.5 quarts? I though it was supposed to be closer to 3.

Yours was probably low then, mine took a little more than 3 qts.

It sounds like you replaced what you took out.

 

Just measured my out and it was 2. Not sure why I can only get 1.5 in.

 

Did you do the temp check mode procedure?

 

You need to give us way more information. Draining from the trans drain plug on a cold truck will release around 3qt of fluid. Then you close the drain plug, open the fill plug and put in MORE than 3qt to account for setting the level via temp check mode.

Back when I did the drain/fill at 10k miles, here were my findings:

"I drained 2.9 quarts (92.8 ounces), I put in a total of 3.5 quarts (112 ounces) and the overflow amount was 6.4 ounces. The truck was underfilled by approximately 12.8 ounces"

 

Problem solved. I assumed (incorrectly) whatever I took out cold would fill back in cold. I hit 1.3 quarts when the check drain started flowing. So then I closed up, added about .2 quarts, and ran the engine. Opened the check valve to nothing. Added approx. 1.2 quart more and got what I was looking for. In the end, I think I was slightly low on fluid initially as I ended up putting in about 2.4 after measuring what drained out.

 

That’s one way of doing it I guess.

 

I would certainly do the correct temp check procedure to ensure your level is good.

 

To clarify I got what I was looking for using the temp check procedure not just fluid out. BTW the fusion app method is a thousand times better than the shifter method.

 

Or you can get them where they got them most likely.

Great write up! I used it to change my fluid today, and it worked great! This was my truck’s first transmission fluid change at 60,000 miles. 3 quarts came out and it took almost 3 1/2 quarts. I think I will be doing this again every 30,000 from now on, since it’s not a full flush. This is how my old fluid looked compared to the new.

 

I think the Technical Service Manual for the 3rd gen is needed. If there’s no temp light then it’s def a different process. Maybe someone who has access to a service manual can post a copy of the page(s)?
