Speaking of Utah...I remembered another dumb story.

When I was a kid, my favorite uncle was a truck driver. When school was out for the summer I would always go on the road with him. So the summer I was 16, I was with him and he got a load from El Paso to Salt Lake City. It was my first trip to Utah and it was just a beautiful place. Hotter than hell though. So, we make it to SLC without any trouble and deliver the load.

Now the trouble begins. My uncle had a gambling addiction problem and he was thinking we weren't far from the Nevada state line. Even at 16 I knew I should try to talk him out of it but, hey, I was 16 and wanted to see a casino. So, we end up in Wendover, Nevada at this casino. I wasn't allowed in the gambling area but could go in the lounge where this buxom lass was wailing out some lounge singer crap that made my ears cry. But she was easy on the eyes.

So, uncle buys me a coke and gives me $20.00 and tells me he'll be back when he's good and rich. I hadn't finished my first coke yet before he's back. And not looking very happy. He asked me if I was ready to go and I said "Yeah, I guess so." So we get in the truck and are riding along and he's being very quiet. Which was not normal at all for him. Finally, he asks me "You got any of that $20.00 left?" I told him I still had all of it. He told me he'd lost every dime he had and we'd need it to eat on the way home. He had his companies credit card to buy diesel but he couldn't get anything else with it.

So, we head home and, needless to say, 20 bucks doesn't go far for 2 people. By the time we reached New Mexico we were broke. So he tells me about this rancher he knows that he used to haul for. We'd go visit him and act like he was trying to drum up some work and hopefully, we'd be invited to dinner. So we go to this ranch and the first thing I see is the rancher's two daughters. One about 17 and the other about 15. Both were dressed like boys and throwing bales of hay around like grown men. But they were still pretty cute. To a 16 year old that meant...they had a pulse. Then the rancher comes out of the barn and the first thing I notice about him is the gunbelt and .45 colt around his waist. That'll kill a double-daughter fantasy pretty quick. Turns out they'd been having a lot of coyote trouble is why he was packing.

He turns out to be a friendly guy and is happy to see my uncle again and does invite us to stay for supper. So, I'm trying to act all cool and flirt with the daughters without being too obvious. Their mom served us up a big meal and I get me a plate of roast beef and mashed taters and then they passed around a bowl of what I assumed was brown gravy. Which I spooned lavishly all over the taters and roast. I noticed them give me a funny look but nobody said anything. I took a bite. It was not gravy. It was hot sauce made out of pure liquid fire. Now there was no way I was going to let those girls know I was an idiot. So I tortured myself and ate it all and probably drank 3 gallons of tea.

Anyway, the rancher was pretty smart and had figured things out. When we were saying our goodbyes he handed uncle a hundred dollar bill and told him to send it to him when he could. I didn't tell my parents about it until many years later.

Lol... that was some hot crow you ate that evening.

 

Just remembered that tomorrow is Friday.

 

Its concerning to me, that V & I's "love child" is in 4th place rn...
