It was a damn good thing! We attacked them just like they did to us in Pearl Harbor. Plus it ended the war.

Too much is unknown regarding both sides and that war. I've heard crap about the US knowing Japan was going to attack Pearl Harbor, and I've also heard about Japan planning to surrender before the bombs were dropped and the US having this knowledge.

I wasn't there. Do I think it was totally necessary? Not really. One bomb really would have done it. There was a reason the Japanese had resorted to Kamakazi fighters later in the war. They were losing and they had to resort to drastic measures.

My father was in the Pacific, and I was in Vietnam. My honest feelings are that we had no choice but to use the bomb, but I've always felt we should have dropped it in Tokyo bay, close enough to let them see what it was yet at a distance that avoided mass death.
Followed by a suggestion they surrender or face the consequences.
Just my opinion. Could be valid reasons why that may not have been feasible.

Did we need to Bomb Japan? it sure as shit seems like it. Glad i didnt have to make that decision. many good points have been made about Finishing It. with a capital F. Should we have bombed the shit out of Tora Bora in Sept/01? HELL YES!!! But definitely not with nukes. (IMO) We have so many tools of destruction ("conventional Weapons") at our disposal we could have obliterated that area without nukes. maybe a little spent plutonium for good measure ...couple "bunker busters"... lol. "they" 'll be coming to revoke my hippy card any moment...JK. We should have Finished It then. with a capital F. Finished bin ladin decisively.

But should we be in Iraq and Afghanistan right now 9 years later?
we are losing a portion of a whole generation of our own precious to a useless fucking mess, and for people that dont want our 'help'. let em have it ! Afghanistan is the graveyard of Empires. I think someone said that. google it. I just did. apparently Ghengis Khan was the last person to conquer anyhing over there. Greed for that "three trillion $$" in mineral resources, and the overland oil pipeline and control of Iraqs oilfields and blah, blah, blah. We are already in the downward spiral apparently. as an empire that is. Dont get me wrong. I love my country and am proud to be an American.
there has got to be a better way though. Our good folks in the Military deserve better. one could hope for a good reason, but as stated, that hasn't happend in a long time.

I know that I dont know half a shit about much, but thats my opinion, and i'm entitled to it.(Love this country!!!) I and I usually keep my mouth shut around here, ( you learn more with your mouth shut, and your ears and eyes open.) I am sure i will offend someone somewhere, but O effin' well for tonight.
Last thought on all that Bullshit ....

Fuck All this Fundamentalist extremist ideology.... My Dad told me once "anyone who tells me their way is the only way, I know that is not the way for me".

    etc.....

another rambling thought... about the WWII genaration.
since we're talking history. I have a ton of respect for my grandparents generation of Americans. Imagine The ingenuity, resolve and determination it took to to build that phase of this country.I sometimes feel like I couldn't work hard enough to undrstand,

or have any clue what it's like to go without, or to want for anything. much less survive (and thrive) throughthe depression, halocaust, WWII,etc... having a stable life ...That is a gift from my (our) grandparents and parents hard work. The reprecussions of not having to strive or suffer a little are obvious in quite a lot of the kids today. (OMG....Me too?!?!?) America is pretty fucked (like the Roman Empire) if we cannot instill our work ethic again somehow. Hopefully that was respectful.

...and Mods...if this is OT it can be booted to somewhere else. its just what i think...:D

I think it was the right thing to do. In fact, I hear they've since rebuilt the cities. I think we should nuke them again, just to make sure they got the point.

i was watching the history channel a while back and they had an old japanese general on an interview. He said that the japanese military minds didnt believe a single bomb had that much capacity for destruction. They thought the first bomb was our final "strike" and after that they didnt believe we had the capability for a second attack of that magnitude, especially only two days after the first attack.

Maybe they thought they could hold out if it really was our final all in "strike". when it happened againit was a holy shit moment and they signed the treaty

    ^Yes, yes he is.

And if you don't believe that the drops were part experimentation why did they drop two totally different bombs instead of the same one twice?

My understanding is they only had those two left. The first, Little boy, used Uranium-235 and Fat Man used Plutonium (which was less rare). A third one was used for testing in the US. More bombs were being made but no other ones were available at the time.

I just read a biography about Oppenheimer and Manhattan, the bombs worked as advertised, they ended the war quickly. What isn't said though is that the Japanese were already looking for a way out, they knew they were beaten. I think truman did right by deciding on hiroshima, nagasaki could have waited or not gone at all and they still would have surrendered. Now why cant we get someone with the stones to do that in NW Pakistan?

I like them too. I like their work ethic. No question their products and competition have been a driving force and benchmark for American Auto Mfgrs to continually improve their quality. I'm a WWII history nut, and do not agree with their mindset and tactics of that period. It does not mean that I do not have respect for them today.

People second guessing what was done in the past that allows their very existence today = :jerkoff: so :brianr:

Political correctness in a war setting is a suppository...stick it up your ass.

Bottom line, wrong shit was happening, we didn't start it, nobody listened to our advice, dumbasses fucked with the wrong people & we ended the nonfuckinsense.

x2. The "Fat Man" and the Trinity Gadget were Plutonium implosion weapons. Easier to obtain plutonium but far, far more complicated to construct and put into operation. The "Little Boy" was the far simpler "gun-type" but it was harder to get the Uranium. The simplicity was seen to guarantee a higher probability of success so there was no test prior to deployment.

So much blood would have been shed if the war continued. Even the survivors of the blasts say it was needed to end the war. yes, it sucks so many "innocent" ( I say this because there is no way to tell of the vitems stance on the war, death to all Americans, or wish the war would end.) but a necessary evil. That's what war was back then. no one was safe, War was war!
