Anyone out there rebuild a 2.4? I have a 98 with 417k miles really wanna rebuild the motor in it. Wanting to know the best parts and/or part numbers for this build. Any help would be appreciated.

Plenty of people in the mini truck scene. The I4 is the ideal engine for boost versus the V6.

Check out www.customtacos.com, they’re more catered towards built mini trucks.

Thanks man. Just looked evidently the stock internals are already forged from Toyota. Not sure if I can still apply around 5-8psi without any engine work like head, injectors, studs, etc

Edit: also I’m not sure what they’ll hold with 417k miles

If you’re looking at boost above 4-5 PSI I’d start worrying about a piggyback computer and tuning.

If I was doing a turbo I’d want a piggyback no matter what PSI I’m running. Superchargers are OK below a certain pressure.

Can you explain piggy backing. Is that equivalent to flashing the ECU

Toyota ECU’s (majority) are locked and you cannot flash them. A piggyback is wired in parallel with the stock ECU an acts as a tunable ECU

Just find a fresher engine. Parts are too high. Don't boost unless you like playing with cars.

If you like playing with cars(trucks) get a V8. Boost it or not but don't waste time or money on a 4 or 6 trying to make a hot rod out of a slug.

Gotcha. Should i change internals? Truck has 417k on the odometer. Maybe do a head, timing kit, head studs and flushable ecu

I have a v8 f150. I’m super into tuner cars and been wanting to turbo something. The reason I bought the truck was to lower it and eventually turbo it. Just wanna have some fun

faster is funner. If you insist on a 4, go get a Honda that was designed for higher rpm use. Everything about Toyota is dependability and reliability. Our cams aren't even divorced.

Depends on what you want. Maybe @boostedka can point you in the right direction.

Well, anyway. Back to the original post.

Bored out with all new Toyo parts is gonna cost a LOT of money. No one does it. Other parts mean less reliable. Why bother?

Plenty of people boost Toyotas, even the pickups. This forum is just catered more towards the off-road and daily driver scene versus a forum like www.customtacos.com

He originally asked about rebuilding a tired engine. Not blowing it up.

edit: Is CT still around? I thought it sold to TMZ?

There was a turbo 2.4 22re lowrider that was owned by my buddy and it wound up being sold around town, when my friend had it it ran good, but kept having engine troubles. It’s funny it was white then the new owner fixed it painted it yellow, he was another friend of mine then sold it to some other guy. My two buddies got fed up tinkering with it, it was pretty quick and sounded awesome though. I think it was nice but wasn’t shit your pants fast though, I used to race them (please laugh) with my stock n/a 22re with exhuast and manual shift, and always kept up because they couldn’t hit boost correctly. Toyota made a rare 22ret 2.4 which was a turbo model stock with such a small turbo, but boosted stock nonetheless. Where I live there’s alot of builders that would be happy to do major engine work, LA area.

Like I said I really want something turbo. It doesn’t have to be crazy fast. Maybe I’ll do a header and custom exhaust to see what changes and maybe when I do that do an intake as well.

You can boost those 2.4 Motors with minimal work. You can run 7-8 psi on a 50 trim turbo with pink tops and and high flow fuel pump. After that you’ll want some tuning. I ran that set up on my 2.7 for a while with zero issues. The 2.4 holds more boost before breaking things due to having less stroke. The longer rods of the 2.7 are the weak point. Since the 2.4 has shorter rods they will hold more boost...the head gasket will likely go first on a healthy 2.4. With a good tune guys have pushed 15-17psi on a stock 2.4 block.

If you want to go big with boost I’d recommend skipping the piggy back and going with a stand-alone like Megasquirt, Haltech.

As for re building the motor, check out dick4x4’s build on customtacos. He built a 2.4 to put in his 4wd Tacoma. He probably has some good info for parts you’d need.
