Highly recommend ordering complete thirds from ECGS and have @hacklerjason do you install.

Sykes and Combs do mostly Jeeps. Don’t know any Toyota’s that have gone with them.

And Maui Offroad...you HAVE to get Jeff (the owner) to install. Otherwise, it’ll be hit or miss. I’ve also heard a couple of guys that went with MOR, and they have had to go back to make adjustments to prevent further damages or not feeling right.

Everywhere I’ve read that these should have come 4.88 from the factory.

All depends on Year, Transmission, tire size, weight, and what you plan to do with your truck (haul, tow, wheel, etc.)

Sorry I should have specified for a 3rd gen, auto. Like I said though. Everywhere I read it makes it more drivable. Plenty guys complaining about the auto always shifting and no more power.

I read lots of guys who go 4.88 regret not going 5.29. Maybe something to look into as well.

But for DD, i could see 4.88 being good. especially only doing 285. I didn't do any regrearing so don't take any advice from me to literally, but something to look into i guess

i guess it depends on driving habits, higher than stock will start to show on the tank mpg...and for a stock production truck, the manufacture wants to squeeze what they can to meet all the projected goals within the budget.

I'm still on stock 3.73 with my 255/85's and i'm fine with it. I regularly shift into 4 going up and down hills just to keep the trans from searching, but I like my solid 16.5mpg/tank avg considering the added weight and everything else.

285's will change things due to the tire width with rolling resistance and contact, actually every tire size has pros and cons...I think 4.10 stock gearing would be almost a perfect balance for long term trending.

For auto transmission 3rd gen Tacoma with 285 tires, you should be good with 4.88.

5.29 is if you plan to go with 35 tires, or plan to haul/tow lots or add significant weight such as armor, winch, dual batteries, and other heavy accessories like camper shell, bed rack, and RTT.

Are 2nd gen and 3rd gen the same for gearing?

I’ve been told by ECGS and read/viewed that they are different. Same goes for manual and auto transmission.

Either way, I’m really glad I went with 4.88 on my 2012 auto transmission Tacoma with 35x12.50 tires and some other goodies.

I didn't realize the final drive ratio was that different...and the MY17 auto is 6spd vs 5spd and rear diff gearing is 3.90 vs 3.73

5.29 still seams a little high, that's more of a gearing size for 37s, unless you want to drive the truck like a car.

no wonder they had all those transmission issues

Even the 4.30 that comes in the manual would be better than the 3.90 for the auto.

Thinking about it 5.29, just to help acceleration and gain a few more mpgs on a stock tacoma. Is it good for sitting in slow west bound traffic and to let it roll? maybe haha. Not sure yet, maybe when my warranty is up.

It is, but I still want 4.88s. Truck has no pep on inclines until you’re digging into the RPMs on a steep incline at low speed.

5.29 is absolute overkill unless you’re running 35s or higher. Even then, you’re really killing your highway drivability.. but if you’re on 35s, probably not a huge concern.

Like @seoulja99 said, full members from ECGS. Set it and forget it.
