Well I had a tire blow out earlier this week so I ordered some tires! I planned on getting a lift but after seeing a few posts with 285s on stock trucks I had to try it myself. It looks like it should only rub the UCA at full lock with some uptravel, but I’ll find out next week when I get them mounted up with the new wheels. I’ll post pics of the truck and I’ll try to show how close and where it rubs when they’re on. Also wheel and tire setup are 285/75/16 Ko2’s and Konig Countersteer Type X from FN Wheels. Hoping I don’t have to massage the fenders too much!

They wont rub the UCAs with the type X. UCAs and the wheel essentially remain constantly distant from each other if it doesn't touch when parked it never will. Unless you get a wider wheel with low offset, like 17x9 with a positive offset, the tire will never touch unless you find a way to flex the top of the tire. I can say with confidence, since you're getting a 16x8 type x, your're moving the wheel almost an inch outward from stock. Scrub radius will increase, you will have rub at the cab side of the fender.

Aside from body lifts, the wheel and tire still make the same up/down stroke travel with lifts, unless you have long travel. With just about any lift normally seen here you can and will have the same rub lifted or not if you compress the suspension because it will still travel upwards to the same amount as stock. Basically rub will most likely happen lifted or not if no cutting or work is done. The variables are the wheels and tires you choose. BFGs run small so you have an advantage there.

If you want to decrease the occurrence of rubbing, stock wheels will work better for you. I don't exactly remember the stock OR offset and size, but people have run 285s on the SEMA style 17s without UCA contact.

    Good luck.

I’m on stock suspension with 285s. Did the CMC and pinch weld and have had no issues with rubbing even when off roading. My wheels have 0 offset.

I’m gonna try 315’s on stock suspension on Ray10 wheel next week. I currently rub top of wheel well when my billies fade. And a little on cab mount. I trimmed some plastic as well.

Thanks for the reply! When I was going through steering and looking at the stock wheel and tire the cab side of the fender was the closest but I figure I’ll be able to push most of the plastic back. That was at ride height though of course. I don’t do a ton of off roading and what I do isn’t too bad.

What is a "CMC and pinch weld"?

Can mount chop. Fitting 285s isn't for the faint at heart.

Thanks , I googled it and came up with "Cab Mount Chop" instead of "Can" and got the general idea. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal if you can weld. Mine came with a crappy lift kit from the dealer so my 285's fit fine but I am probably going to upgrade my lift kit to something else when I have some time.

Cab mount chop . and the pinch weld is at the rear of the wheel arch behind the fender liner . Picture just before welding on the CMC plate .

Thanks! I saw it in a few threads but never knew what it was referring to.

Yeah I did not need to CMC until after I added the winch, the bumper, the skids, the sliders, the dual batteries, the diamondback, etc. But mine is tipping the scales @ 6,000 lbs now .

I had them on my 4x2 with 3" front and 1 " rear with 16"x9" w/13mm offset and they rubbed front of the tire and a lot rear of the tire . I would think a minimum of 4-6" in front for 285/75R16 not to rub.

I went to a 35x12.5 on my Sequoia and totally thought I'd rub and have to do the CMC mod, but surprised it's perfect. Apples and oranges compared to my Tacoma, but I have to say, those 285s look huge! Lol

Gotta watch out with 10ply tires. Very tough on the transmission. I ran only 10 ply on my last truck (2nd gen) and it messed up the transmission and torque converter.

Cab mount chop and hammering down the pinch weld. The most common places where 285s rub. Honestly not that hard to do with the right tools. Angle grinder and welding torch (ok that’s a tough part) and a big hammer.

    have fun. 35'sss.jpg

i'm lifted 2.75'' on Fox 2.5's up front. with HD Dakars in the rear.

you will basically not be able to get out of the tire shop without rubbing that first crank of the steering wheel.

    UPDATE:

They fit... kinda. luckily I didn’t work today so I could go to the shop and watch them get mounted. The owner was nice enough to lend me a heat gun and grinder so I could make it home. Might do CMC and some more trimming on Sunday. I’m pretty set on not doing a lift but I think I’ll at least level it.
