Yeah it was fun! Had to winch twice. Only carnage was pretty sure some gears in the winch got buggered up. It still works but it sounds likeliest change in a metal coffee can in there. I’m gonna pull it apart and see if they’ll warranty the parts since it was a lifetime mechanical warranty.

Smittybilt 9.5k, their cheapest one. Before it “failed” I had taken it apart to regrease it. This is my second time having it apart though, but something must’ve been a hair off this time. While I did have it apart I noticed one of the gears was hard to spin, so maybe it was on its way out anyways? Who knows. If I have to get a new winch I won’t be too terribly sad.

I've been following that one along from the beginning. I'm on the kids side on this one. The Bill dude is being a prick IMO

Agree with Randy on this one the key word is he is a kid. Bill is being a prick. I have two boys and hope someone would offer some help instead of being a dick. IMO

So I'm considering ditching the cap+prinsu+awning and getting a black or tan soft topper. As I'm realizing I just wheel and pretty rarely camp, I'm moving my truck in that direction with little things, like the swingout for example. I'm so happy with that decision.

It'll shed more weight, and I won't need to worry about shoving the cap into trees which I've done a couple times while off camber. I can just fold it down for trips. But I still get the benefit of dry storage for it's a rainy wheeling day and I want to keep my fridge nice and dry (that's one thing I'll never get rid of).

Now that I have no swingout I don't need any up top storage, as I can just fold the tailgate down for longer things.

Anyways I'm open to thoughts and discussion.

I love mine. I wish I would have sealed under the bed rail cap like Jim Bob did. I think he used HVAC tape or something. I tried siliconing but water still seeps in under the rail.
