That is nasty. Reminds me of the crappy paint jobs on GM's in the 1980's and Chrysler's of the 1990's. Damn shame.

Just wondering, Mexico built or Texas built? Hopefully you get that warrantied covered.

Took it to the dealer and all he did was take pictures and said he has to send them to Toyota. He said all the would probably paint is just the part that’s peeling. Still haven’t heard back.

They will paint the door only. Once they do make sure color matches to the truck. If you notice slight color difference ask to repaint whole side. I have seen many cars with fender or door not matching or aging same as rest of the vehicle. My 2017 OR paint became chalky on roof and hood. Toyota rep had to look and measure pain before approving repaint. Now I am waiting for dealer to arrange date when to repaint it.

I have a 16 inferno, no mud flaps and offset tires. My rock chips are not even close to what that first two pictures show. Idk how it would chip behind the door so much

I got the same exact thing. Had the whole clay bar thing done to it last summer which at first I thought is what caused this but then found out that it's a factory paint issue. Same model, same color, same issue! ugh!

Took it to Mossy Toyota in San Diego. They sent pictures to Toyota USA. Toyota USA stated that this is not a warrantable defect. But they said they would “Do Me A Favor” and touch up the paint that is peeling. The other side is in the first stage of the same issue but they said that they will not paint it because it is not Flaking as bad as this side. They said they would do a “Goodwill” and paint the flaking side. WTF “Doing Me a Favor” it’s not my fault the paint is flaking. I am highly disappointed in how they are handling this issue. Not a “Warrantable Defect” what is it then. Anyone know how I should handle this please let me know if I can escalate this issue.

Is your vehicle still under warranty? If so, then this sure looks like a defect in workmanship. My first piece of advice would be to go to a Toyota approved body shop (collision center) if you're dealership doesn't do body work and get them to assess the issue and what caused it. If they tell you that it's due to a defect in either the paint, the clear coat or the application of either then it's on Toyota. Open and shut to fix it completely and correctly. If it turns out that it's flaking because of something that you did or someone else did then I'm afraid it might be on your dime and your next call would be to your insurance company I'm afraid. You might want to contact your insurance company first and get their opinion. Let them chase down Toyota. Just spit balling here. I'm dealing with a paint issue myself right now and not getting great results from Toyota either. Waiting on test results to come back from my Body Shop's lab on what they find in the paint, clear coat or both. Good luck bud!

............and I drive on dirt roads all the time and haven't seen hardly any paint chipping on my rig. I agree that it's total b.s. on the part of Toyota!

Hey Oshnjoe, I'm right in the thick of it now with Toyota. They've created a Case number for my issue and they've contacted me a couple of times for additional information so I'm now officially on their radar. So far they're not budging on only agreeing to fix the affected areas. I've brought my truck to a Toyota Approved Body shop for an estimate and he took a sample off of the roof and sent it out to the Valspar Paint lab. Should have the results back in another week and then he'll be able to finish his assessment. Also just noticed this past weekend that the areas on the hood are spreading quite rapidly. Still not seeing anything on the Doors or fenders yet but I'm pretty certain that it's only a matter of time. I only know of one person in here that was able to get Toyota to repaint their entire vehicle for this same problem and I'm hoping that they'll look at his case and do the same for me but who knows. You're the first person that I've heard of with this issue on one that's not a 2017. So far the pattern has been 2017 Tacoma's in BBP color exclusively. Are we talking about the same paint issue? White cloud-like blotches appearing on the hood and roof?

Yes, absolutely the same problem but so far limited to the roof. The color matched A.R.E. cap I've had on the truck since nearly day one is perfect (paint wise) so I don't get it that the truck's roof paint is failing. I will likely be calling the Toyota Customer Experience line shortly. Will likely get blown off, but have to try anyway. Good luck with your case.

Yes it does. At least my 2002 had oem clear coat. I replaced my tailgate and repainted it myself to match. The auto paint store looked up the year and paint code and it did call for clear. And mine never yellowed under the brutal CA sun. Recent pic, paint was excellent:

Might add there is a reason white is also considered the standard fleet color. It's low maintenance and reflects heat instead of absorbing it. Former fleet and heavy equipment painter here.

On the OP's paint issue it appears the clear coat has degraded prematurely due to UV or maybe contimanents or pollution. It clearly is failing prematurely. Curious as to what the lab finds.

If you search around this Forum you can see where people even posted letters directly from Toyota stating that Super White does not have a separate clear, would assume it is still that way.

I've read those claims/posts on here and other forums but don't believe the letters from corporate Toyota. They lie all the time.

The local auto paint store and dealer confirmed my 02 Tacoma had an OEM clear coat. Another employee of another auto paint store confirmed his 07 Tacoma in super white had a factory clear coat.

Whenever I hand rubbed brush scratches incurred on my 02 with rubbing compound I never saw any white paint pigment left on the colored cloth I used. This confirmed Toyota indeed used clear coat on Super White at the former factory in Fremont, CA at least in 2002.

So I dropped off the truck today. Toyota of USA finally said the would cover that part that’s flaking under warranty. I asked about the driver side where it has orange peel and that stated since it’s not flaking now the won’t paint it. I asked when it does start peeling then what. They said that we will cross that bridge when we get there. So they said they will only touch up the part that is peeling. I should get it back Friday. I hope that the paint will match and I won’t even notice. Hopefully the driver side won’t start peeling soon.
