I’m an old guy and I can tell you that all these problems are basic characteristics of all drum brakes. I actually remember buying and having cars with four wheel drum brakes and they all suck when they get wet they all can sieze up if you go through water set the brakes and let them sit. Drum brakes and water do not mix. Cracked shoes at the rivets , shoes coming unbonded from the metal, locked up drums and wheels , many many issues with drum brakes which is why the majority of the automotive community gave up on drum brakes many years ago. Drum brakes also yield poorer fuel economy because of the drag. They’re really outdated in all respects.

    Well,
I bought a truck not a car. Im bringing my issue up to see how common it is. Ive invested a good amount of cash on my truck for it to be acting up. I bought the truck for its main purpose, to drive it til the wheels fall out. Apparently its occuring early. I scheduled an appointment with my local dealer @ Victory Toyota in Seaside and they tried telling me its 150/hr for tech. This lady is way out her mind. I informed her that its covered under warranty and I aint paying one penny. Im close to the end with Toyota. The Tacomas amount of power and issues that spike from a truck are forcing me to look into other trucks.

Everytime! Every year now I take my drum brakes apart, clean and re-grease in the proper spots. And they STILL stick at times.

    Bumping this thread.
I have a 2017 Tacoma OR manual trans.
I was just stuck for about an hour and half because my rear right drum brakes were locked. I did drive through a big mud puddle and park because it’s where my fishing spot is. I had it lock up a few times before but usually a few pumps of the brakes frees it up. This time was really weird. It would unlock and stay free while reversing but as soon as I try to go forward it feels like I yanked up the ebrake but only on the rear right side. I took about two water bottles and tried to get the drum brake wet again maybe to get whatever’s in there loose again. Seems like it may have helped because about 5 minutes after I watered the brake drum it finally came free, with along with pumping the brakes and moving back and forth.

I called the dealer to tell them what was going on and they told me to bring it in. I go all the way there and explain what was going on and the service tech tells me it’s normal and there is no fix for it. Why didn’t they just tell me this over the phone? Lol. I wasted about a whole hour on the drive alone. Guess I’ll start keeping a gallon of water in the truck bed or something just in case this happens again.

When I took it in, they cleaned up the right side drum and it stopped doing it. As soon as i took it offroading it did it again after i used the e break. Go figure.

Before everyone starts thinking that this only a drum brake problem... I've had this happen to DISK brakes as well. Front driver's side actually. Some combination of salt/slush/freeze got that one locked up real good. Had to 3-wheel it up the street to the nearest piece of dry clean pavement to get the traction I needed to break it free.

Mine is doing the same thing right now. We just had a snow storm yesterday and today I drove to work when the roads are somewhat slushy and wet. I park in a parking garage at work. I just got the car started and the rear passenger wheel is not spinning, it’s just dragging. I tried engaging and disengaging the parking brake and I tried moving forward and backwards. It’s a 2016 TRD SPORT with a manual tranny, I have 43k miles on it.

    Temperature outside is 44 degrees.

I can’t even take the tire off since I’m in professional attire and I’d get soaked (I work in an office).

I can’t believe that something like this can happen in 2018. What a lovely start to a weekend.

So I got it unstuck. I went back in the office and took a good one hour crap while reading the threads. I went down in the garage and tried rocking it back and forth. That did not get it free. I then stepped on the brake really hard and I heard a little “ping” noise. Sounded like something came lose. To my amazement I got unstuck. I don’t get how something like this can happen. I use this truck to get me to from the office and then do few Home Depot runs on the weekend. I don’t off-road nor do I use this truck for anything strenuous.

Have not had this happen yet on the new Taco, but have had this happen on many other drum brake vehicles: frozen water from water crossings, rusty/stuck e-brake cables, rusty drums that sat for weeks, etc. Fords, Subarus, Chevys, Toyotas. My old Volvo had a rear e-brake that is a drum inside a disc, but I never had trouble with it, other than having to adjust the cable tensioners. On a friend's rusty-ass Taco, the pivot in the e-brake line just under the driver side got stuck... lots of WD-40 and grease on all of the pivots fixed that one.

2010 6 speed manual right rear wheel locked up. This happened to me today...thats why Im here. Seems common to right rear and manual trans. Anyway 4 low back and forth....but this seems to be an excessive method to resolve. I am open to any suggestions on a fix.

Beats me, our bathrooms are a solid walk from where our office is. That would suck to have the restrooms right in the office though, talk about a shit storm

Probably no worse than the smell in some lunch rooms though. Maybe it's a cover up. Toilets in the office space. CONSPIRACIES! :annoyed:

This just happened to me today.

2010, 6 speed manual, rear right tire locked.

My truck sat for about 2 hours after washing it. As I was excitedly leaving to pick up my order from Wingstop, I had to deal with this shit.

Tried rocking back and forth for about 5 mins, nothing. Got out and physically turned the wheel by hand, rocking it back and forth. It only rocked about an inch in either direction.

When I got back in, voila, it rolled like normal.

This was my first experience with this. Thanks for the drum brakes Toyota.
