Congrats. I was just in your position a couple months ago. It's a good feeling to get paint out the way and have one color.

Looks good. I had a little more progress on my roof this weekend. Not going nearly as crazy as yours with all the tubes.

    That's sexy! Great work!

The center tube is interesting. Definitely not going to collapse.

So hypothetical: Would you rather buy a turnkey LT truck off of somewhere like Race-dezert, or would you buy a taco / tundra off craigslist and build it up.

I see option 1 being far cheaper, as I can find some well built trucks for under what I could build one for.

Option 2 I suppose has the benefit of you know what was done and why. Plus with the nature of LTs purpose, it would be like buying a used rental car...it got thrashed.

Unless I knew the full history and quality of work that was done, I’d have a hard time trusting the Craigslist college kid selling is ranger and would prefer to build it. It’s likely the more expensive option, but you get to make it what you want.

The good thing about tacomaworld is most people who have extensively modded their trucks have detailed build threads. They often disclose information in their build threads that you otherwise may not bring up with a buyer depending on how honest you are or what they ask about. So if you can find a built truck for sale here and can review the build thread well it may not be as much of a risk. Craigslist though is another story.

Yeah, after all my research, LT isn’t for me. They look sexy as hell and do some good stuff. But just isn’t practical for me

It's really going to depend on the truck and the history of said truck. Prep history, Prior owner. etc. ... you pick up some hammered craigslist special, yea, it's probably going to be a pile.

Picking up someone one else's project well built, done or mostly done is the way to go from a time and financial standpoint. Making it your own with some tweaks to get out in the dirt as soon as possible with your buddies.

Sure building a truck up from stock is great... you are the only one to beat on it, you know everything that's gone wrong with it, truck is perfect. But that takes time and a 4 times the money.

I've done both a few times...starting from bone stock sucks, basically there my tacoma. Let someone else take the cost of parts off the lips...

I look at it like if I sold my prerunner to someone... sure there is a ton of shit that could be rewired, cleaned up, repainted,etc... but no way could you build the truck for price I would get if I sold it.

Everyone is in the game for different reasons for me personally getting in the dirt an using my vehicles is my priority over having it sit on jack stands.

If you know what to look for you can save a ton of money and if you get to find close enough to what you want to build to not have to start all over and still be saving time and money it's completely worth it, but if you don't know what to look for you might make an unfortunate mistake. If I wanted a more generally built prerunner there's no way I would have built one, but there's some things I prefer to keep in the concept of the vehicle that kind of keep me from just buying one. That said it's been over 2 years and the truck has been driven less than 220 miles with the first 200 on the day I bought it lol.

If I just wanted to bomb fire roads / mob dunes I'd definitely buy something like this and keep modding with the money I saved:
