Theres a thread lingering around here which some people stated that dealerships weren’t honoring a recall on the TSS due to lifts. So It got me thinking, with all the mods I’m doing and future mods I’m planning, if they can’t honor a recall then why would they fix anything on my truck if it ever went wrong.

Now I get it, if I have suspension issues but I have a lift then I know it’ll void the warranty.. etc. But they always try linking issues to unrelated mods.

Future mods would be 35s, re-gear, 14” rear shocks, OV-Tune..

So should I just cancel my extended warranty? I heard it’s possible and I believe they credit me some money back.

    Thoughts, ideas, concerns?

There are a lot of parts that can go wrong. Electrical, mechanical, structural, etc. If the motor blows up, they cannot blame it on the lift. Now if you have turbos installed then yeah.

They have to prove your mod caused the issue at hand. This is very hard for the dealer/Toyota to prove. My opinion I'd keep it. I have a 6 year warranty, keeping mine.

If you’re planning on modifying your truck just cancel it and use that money for your mods

Yeah I’ve thought about the electrical stuff failing. It’s the only reason I haven’t canceled it yet.

well they won’t hand me any cash, it’ll just go into the trucks loan. But paying it off faster=mods quicker? Lol.

Actually they should write you a check. It takes 6-8 weeks. I am cancelling my tire/wheel coverage, just called today. I have to physically go to the dealer to cancel.

Crap, I bought the truck 8 hours away lol. Was on vacation, stopped by and got a killer deal so I took it. Not sure if I’d want to make the drive :frusty:

I'm sure there is a way to handle that situation. I'd look at your paperwork. It's in the fine print how to cancel. I bought mine at Autonation Toyota. Maybe there are differences.

In my opinion, and this is coming from someone in the car business, it comes down to your service department.

Some service departments shy away from modified vehicles too quickly or put your appointment off so far that you're forced to go to another dealership that'll take your truck in sooner.

If the service manager at your store isn't one of those guys/gals, and are reasonable enough to understand that "said mods" were not the cause of let's say...your air conditioning not working any more or your TSS or whatever that is, then keep it.

If they turn down warranty work/recalls due to modifications, then cancel it right away.

As others have stated, there should be a phone number/contact information that you can call to see about cancelling it.

The finance manager at a dealership would try to make you keep it, but if you're being turned away due to "mods", then I'm sure they'll understand.

Sell an extended service contract, and honor it. Both departments need to work together to take care of the customer.

Absolutely, Today I spent an hour on the phone with Toyota Regional arguing the dealership made the changes to my Taco. Fix the PCS. The sales dept. swore there was no reason it would not be covered at the time of sale. Guess what NO WAY NO HOW. I ask for my Extended Warranty money back. Their refunding some minus a $50.00 charge. But still how could they sell me an Extended Warranty on something the Dealer violated Toyota's Policy on??? Fraud

Its hit or miss with a modified truck even one you bought from the dealer already lifted, etc. Finding a good service advisor and building a relationship is key, some dealers/advisors wont touch the truck, will argue with you tooth and nail its the tires, the lift, the whatever on warranty coverage, others will be more rational and take care of issues no problems. Being active duty I've been stationed a few places with a few modded tacos and have had both. I've had a dealer tell me the all terrain tires were causing my rear diff howl on my 2016 and have also had another cover my lifted 4 year old truck 6k miles from being out of the 60k powertrain replace the passenger side diff seal after it started leaking. Sure many here will argue Magnussen act, blah blah blah, but at the end of the day it comes down to the dealer, you can argue all you want, call Toyota all you want sometimes they are just going to play the lift / mod card and deny a claim.

It used to not be so bad, reason I loved Toyota, amazing customer service, but I fear that people are starting to complain, nickel and dime Toyota left and right that it's ruining it for those with legit issues. Ask your service writer which owners are the worst, bet you they mention Tacoma owners and FRS/86 owners.

You should sell your extended warranty because its a waste of money (they don’t sell them because it loses them money).

The logic behind selling has nothing to do with manufacturer TSBs or recalls which are entirely separate issues they are just simply wastes of money. Get what coin you can back.

The warranty is transferrable. If I was looking for a 3-5 year old truck, I'd take the one with warranty over one without 10/10 times.

Again, if you have motor issues, they cannot and will not blame the lift. Now things like the diff seals, axles, wheel bearings go out, will most likely be blamed on lift.

I'd sure hate to be at year 4 and have a major issue come up.

    New engine = $6000+
    Warranty = ~ $1500

Dealers have a quota on warranties. Yes Toyota gets the better end of the deal as MOST don't ever use the warranty.

Only reason I got warranties, it was the only way they would give me 1.9% apr. Knowing I could cancel the warranty, I took the deal. I've decided to keep the 6 yr warranty and cancel my tire warranty. But to each their own.

My extended warranty (not through Toyota) will cover my Tacoma with up to a 6” lift and 37” tires. Needless to say I’m at 3” with 32” tires.

That was a finance / dealer tactic. They gave you the APR you qualified for from the get go, based on your tier its a range, rather than make money off giving you a slightly higher rate they made money off your warranty purchase, give and take.

Im always weary of third party warranties, that and alot of dealers/service shops don't want to touch those, hassle with reimbursement, authorization, etc.
