Yes, that is one school of thought. Usually folks refer to "Piedmont" or "Triad" versus "Triangle" (which usually means Raleigh/Durm/Chapa Heel). It definitely gets hillier as you head West. Where I live (Southern Durm) its usually hillier than, say, Smithfield. Where my brother used to live (Florence, SC) it felt incredibly flat.

I am definitely planning to spend my retirement in the orange section of your map, lol.

The historical geography and reasons for where the borders is an interesting read.
Yeah I didn't read into the anchor pinching breather tube from the first post my bad. BTW the foothills technically start in the western counties of the piedmont :anonymous:

Recently I have been reading just to start with understanding my own little corner of Southern Durham. Its pretty fascinating the history. Everything in the Triangle today can seem like brand new subdivisions, but beneath the surface you can still find the deep, deep tracks laid by this long and relatively interesting backstory.

My family is some of the original settlers to NC. We have some really deep roots. My folks still live there. If you ever go near Duke and go to Watts St. My great grandfather built Watts St. Baptist Ch. along with 15 other families by mortgaging their homes to build it. My grandfather and uncle were both very prominent men in Durham for a long time. I've got a ton of books about Durham, Duke, NC as a innovator in medicine (specifically Durham and Wake fores Univ. when it was in Wake county)

Not to mention just past down history from my grandfather that isn't really in any books or anything.
