5100's or 3" toytec?

hey guy i have a 2008 tacoma access cab and i am looking to lift it here really soon. i was just wondering which one you guys would suggest me to get, 5100 billys or 3" toytec?

p.s. i do a lot of hunting and fishing but not any real hardcore offroading.

 

5100s are a great riding shock that are made more for leveling...........but if you want a full lift...go with the toytec 3 inch lift. you can also use the 5100's with the 3 inch lift....great ride.

 

I currently ride the 5100s on my stock coils Access Cab... I am buying a pair of 884 OME coils to give my front end the full 3" lift vs. the 2.5" that I am at right now. Also I will gain a better ride as well!

From what I know if you go 5100s at highest setting you only have 1" of down travel on your front end which makes your ride not that smooth... with the 884's I don't know how much more the down travel is but its more than 1" lol.

 

Later this week, I'm finally going to be ordering my suspension parts. I'm doing a 3" lift too. From my research, it looks like you can get the 5100s (fronts) off ebay for $169. Then, get the adjustable coilover kit from ToyTec for $429. These two parts together will give you the same thing as the coilovers and struts from ToyTec ($799) for $598. The only thing is that you have to get the coils compressed to assemble the coilovers and struts, but I found that O'Reilly's will rent me the spring compressor for free (well, $89 deposit that I get back when I return it).

 

with any aftermarket coil...its best to keep the 5100's at the stock setting.

 

I saw that wheelersoffroad sells the front 5100s for 158/pair. Dont know how much shipping is on them but that looks cheaper.

Looks good. I want to get the 5100s and set them to 2.5. I just dont know if i will be satisfied with it considering that i want a 3". But it doesnt seem that .5 would do that much. What do you think?

 

I think that .5" will matter if you want to go up to 285s. Otherwise, you're probably ok.

From my reading (haven't done it yet) you might have an issue with the stock tires rubbing the stock UCA at 2.5, but I'll let someone else confirm or deny that. I plan on replacing mine with the Total Chaos UCAs.

hey i'm kinda confused too, well the setup I tried to go with was the full ome setup (shocks/coils). The thing is I dont off road period. So I was leaning towards the 5100s at 2.5". But I'm not sure if that would be high enough. Any opinions?

By the way how's 5100 with ome coils?

 

Some of these answers are confusing

I don't believe there is any difference between the spacer lifts- such as the Toytec 3" and the 5100's. The 5100's just have a spacer built-in that you can adjust.You gain the height in the same way; both compress your springs and you lose suspension travel in the process. Combining the 5100's at their highest setting and a 3" Toytec spacer you would gain 5.5" of lift but basically have ZERO front suspension travel.

Maybe a great ride on flat asphalt!

 

i never said use the 5100's on the top setting.....that wouldnt be safe anyway. but keeping them on the stock setting with the coils will ride nice.........how is that confusing?

how big tire/wheel wise are you wanting to go??

and the 5100's are good with the ome coils........gotta keep them on the stock setting though. i have ome 881 coils with 5100's on the stock setting...a little bit of lift for my 04, and it rides great.

Also looking for a good proportion size height but not toooo low something nicer than stock.

 

if you are going with 285's.....im gonna suggest going ahead and getting a 3 inch lift. even with a 3 inch lift, with 285's.....you'll still need to remove the mud flaps and do some minor trimming.
