Flashed the 87 base tune and I’m loving it so far. Smooth, quick acceleration. Engine runs like it’s supposed to. Beautiful.

I believe I’m ready to flash for the first time. Just wanted to double check the options. As a manual transmission the only 87 octane options are “base” and “FOB”? “Performance” and “gear lock” are for autos?

I hope one of the stutter fixes we keep hearing about WRT the A/T updates also works for M/T (obviously not the TC thing).

1.05 91 base, the thing was doing it ~2800 in 4th this morning (pretty much the same feeling as 1.03B/C, in other words - not subtle).

Before anyone gets their panties in a twist, this has been an issue with my truck since new (although the symptom was at a lower RPM ~1500).

I was happy with the driveability of 1.05 FOB 91 - my truck didn't stutter the first time I ran it. The fuel economy was noticeably lower than other files though, so I thought I would try the other offerings.

87 FOB was ok IMO, but the missing power was enough for me to go back to one of the 91 files. Welp, that's when the shitshow began again. I cleared LVs, did the battery disconnect and loaded 1.05 FOB 91, and as expected it ran like dogshit for the first few miles. That cleared up, but the stuttering was there with a vengeance. Regardless, I ran that file for about 500-600km to see what would happen but to no avail.
I tried re-loading the same file WITHOUT doing anything else, no change. Next I went back to 1.05 91 BFO test file and ran it for another ~500km - stutter.
I've currently got almost 600km on 1.05 91 base, and as mentioned above it stutters.

I replaced my CKP a long time ago, it didn't make a difference WRT stutter.
I cleaned my MAF, no difference.
I tried different brands of fuel from varying stations, no difference.
No codes thrown or any indication of a problem except for this driveability issue.

Mat did fix this for me once, during development of 1.04 M/T IIRC. He said it was something to do with VVT and the truck's indecision WRT Atkinson/Otto under certain conditions. One test file later and the stutter was gone, as it was with the official 1.04 91 M/T release... BUT... the damned thing wouldn't stop knocking (I'd never heard my truck do this until that file).

Some of you are probably in full eye roll by now, yeah yeah this fucking guy does nothing but bitch. I'm here to say this problem IS solvable, but there's something about the software in these trucks that defies logic (lol, perhaps a whole lot).

How is it that I can run a particular file without stutter one time, but when I come back to it later it stutters (and won't go away). This happened over a number of months, so of course the temperature/humidity could play a role. I can't help but think that the LV reset/btty disconnect was also a major factor in my case (or the timing of it in conjunction with some other unknown factor).

If your truck doesn't do any of this crazy shit, well I'm happy for you. Don't assume that all trucks are like yours is all I ask.

The ~1800 rpm stutter was all but gone in 1.05 pre-release but has come back for me too in the latest files. I’ve tried 93FOB, 87FOB, and now on 87 Base. I ran at least 500 miles on each tune.

I took advantage of the 40% off TRD parts and wasted some money on the TRD intake and exhaust and have run about 200 miles on 87 Base. Overall I’m pretty content with the tune for daily driving and being able to use 87 octane. Just need that stutter to go away.

I just want my truck to accelerate without feeling like I'm intermittently dropping a cylinder. Again, I'm not blaming this on Mat. It's definitely something that affects SOME trucks and is solvable in the software (IMO).

Mines done the same things since day 1, on every file I have ever gotten. Replaced the CPS and nothing changed. I get hesitations from idle to about 1800 rpm, its very obvious if you roll second gear from a near stop.

Curious, when you people switched to higher octanes (87-91, for instance), how did you prepare for the change? I understand higher octanes are fine if you're running a lower octane tune, but not the other way around. I'm wondering if I should run a couple of tanks on 91 octane prior to making the switch to a 91 tune, or if it's fine to run the tank to almost empty and then filling up with 91 prior to the tune.

To switch to 91, I ran my tank of 87 low then filled up with 93. Flashed after the fill up.

Almost empty is fine. When DTE says 0mi, you have about 3gal left in the tank:

    87 x 3gal / 21.1gal + 92 x 18.1 / 21.1 = 91.3 octane.

Yep. Just like my motorcycle with a 5.5gal tank and the reserve light pops on after using 4gal. I do the mental math to get my real DTE and starting thinking when a good time to stop might be. Ferrying around half a tank of fuel never appealed to me but I understand why others like to never dip low.

That's what I gather from watching the slushbox shitshow over in the dev thread. As I recall, your truck has behaved similarly to mine, over the last few iterations of the tune at least.
Imagine that lol, mine's an early '16 with a 04B13 based file, and yours is an '18 with what.. 04B71 file?

With one hand on the wheel and shifting, and the other hand texting, I have no fingers available for math. Toes would be an option, but I'm concerned about resale value.

Ha! I may have popped up the calculator on my phone mount a couple times in the past for other math. Range calcs I can do without fingers and toes, which is surprising for me also.

For the bike, I just divide the Trip miles by 4. It is usually at 160mi, so that is easy. I'll have at least another 40mi before things get real.

With the Taco, I generally assume 20mpg, so 60mi after the light comes on. The Current Tank Average consistently shows 0.5mpg higher than actual. I will factor that in if out on a trip when passing through towns.
