What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

yeah thats what I mean by don't add more weight too it. It'll destory the fun factor in that truck in a heart beat. I romped on it hard in the Big Horns and it was super fun with the blower on it. Reminded me of Frank..except not fat haha

 

Got a question... Looks like I'll be supercharging in July/August (or so). Anything I need to (or should) do to the motor before adding the supercharger?

 

methanol, do you speak it?

 

I'm talking actual motor. Methanol etc can/will be done when I do the SC. I'm talking is there anything I need to be aware of with the motor... Like, it has 290K+ miles on it. Are head gaskets something I need to think about (example)

Timing belt, Water pump, accessory belts, cam plugs, and all those things were done around 30K miles ago.

Valve covers, intake gaskets, Tbody gasket, plugs, wires, etc done around 10K miles ago. (some of those will change, and I guess the spark plugs will need to be different).

 

Got my rear end fully re assembled, minus the brakes. Also got the new tires mounted on my new 3rd gen wheels

Should be fine. But if the Piston rings aren't good anymore(not super likely) that's about it. If your HG has issues now it would be showing up already.

But "done"... what is this foriegn word of which you speak? This word "done" is not familiar to me.

 

It'd been several weeks since my last trip and as usual that meant I had a bad case of the shakes. Spring is such a frustrating time from an adventure perspective - the weather seems so nice, and yet everywhere interesting is still covered in snow. And, the winter staple - the desert - is getting hot.

You can imagine my delight when a check of the weather showed that the Alvord Desert - a place we'd visited for the first time last October - was going to have weather in the mid-70's. From my perspective, we hadn't spent nearly enough time there exploring the roads; from @mrs.turbodb's point of view: we'd skipped all of the hot springs!

The horror, I know. It was time to go!

...I don't know if anyone actually remembers the last time we visited, but one of the most remarkable things about the Playa is the surreal experience you get when driving on it at high speed. It's so flat, and so vast, that objects in the distance appear stationary while the ground around the truck is flying by. The only reaction I've ever seen to this phenomenon is a big-old-smile, and that's what happened this time as well, as dust kicked up behind us, hanging in the still air - a Taco contrail.

Sounds like your engine is in good shape so I would just slap the supercharger on there and go...but if it were me I'd do a meth kit with it from the get go. Even if you're one of the lucky few that doesn't "need" any additional fuel mods to prevent running lean (seems almost everyone does though), the meth kit is a good way to keep temps down. Our superchargers don't have built in intercoolers like the 2nd gen Tacoma superchargers have and they are very prone to heat soak which isn't good in a number of ways. Especially living somewhere like CA where ambient temps get really hot during summer.

Also getcha a wideband AFR gauge to install at the same time too

 

I'm planing on venting the hood with loovered inserts, as well as looking in to an oil filter relocate running through an oil cooler. I also have a snorkle supposed to be delivered today (people are reporting the snorkle has shown some moderate results in lowering temps)

The supercharger I'll be buying is coming with a wideband AFR guage.

 

Nice, yeah I toyed with the idea of a custom slotted hood or functional hood scoop like what @1997tacomav6 did on his truck.

Yeah the snorkel helps with intake temps a bit, since I installed mine I noticed a good 10 degree drop overall in intake temps. Haven't yet seen how it does in really hot weather but I'll find out soon enough with summer coming here.

 

Not sure the hood will help much. But can't hurt.

The Met/water kit will do the most. Up to 100 degrees cooler.

Id run an AEM FIC6 with it too. Don't bother with any URD crap.

 

yeah for me I don't know how much a slotted hood or hood scoop would do seeing as how most of my crazy high intake temps are during slow/crawling wheeling speeds. Having a meth kit installed would be the best thing to do overall for temps

 

Anyone with All Pro leaf springs know which AALs work with them? All Pro and Trail Gear don't list any AALs for them on their website.

Or can I just add any brand AAL to the pack? They seem to be pretty generic across the board, though most do mention specific applications in their descriptions

 

The louvers are just to give heat another place to rise out of. And if I do it right should be worth some cool points.

I'm definately looking at the meth/water kit.

The guage is an AEM.

 

He's referring to the AEM FIC6 which is a tuning device to control fuel/ignition

The AEM AFR gauge is a good one though, that's the one I have.

 

Not sure how much it will help. But physics say heat goes up. Adding more holes for it to rise out of isn't going to hurt anything.

Also physics say when heat goes up, it's pulling cooler air to replace it.

 

Have you found any vents that you like yet? I still haven't found any that scream buy me lol
