Root it. I rooted my HTC Eris and have 2.2 on it even though Verizon says it can't run it (and therefor will never release it as an update).

 

I'm still figuring the whole Droid OS out. what does it mean to root it? is it like jail-breaking an iPhone?

 

Sorta.... It gives you root access (think admin rights on a PC) so you can install more apps (like wifi tether that Verizon wants to charge $20/month to get), and install a whole new OS. My Eris came with with Android 1.6. I got sick of waiting for the 2.1 update and flashed the leaked versions. Now with root I can run 2.2 even if verizon/HTC never release an "approved" update for the phone to get it to 2.2. I can also remove stock apps I never use (like Amazon MP3). You can over clock too once rooted. My Eris is 528MHz stock, with the rom I'm running it's running at 710MHz, and with an app called SetCPU I can push it to 787MHz. People with the original moto droid (500-ish MHz) have them pushed to 1.250GHz.

 

Ok cool. I'm guessing that rooting voids warranties and insuance coverage. I don't think I'll be doing it bc i really dont wanna screw it up and it runs fine as is lol

Nope, he got the only one out at our little VZ store. Idk how hard they are to find bc I havent really researched it. But after playing around with it today, it is a sweet phone, but I like my Incredible just as well (probably more when I get the 2.2 update whenever it comes out)
