You have to take inflation into account or it’s just ignorance. Are they overpriced fuck yea almost every vehicle is over priced. Especially Toyota’s because the tariffs. MSRP on Tundra 2004 15k to 32k msrp for 2004 F150 ranged from 22k-30k F250 2004 28k-33k. A fully loaded 2004 Tacoma was just a tad over 22k so again your argument doesn’t hold water.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

It's not a question (for me anyway) of dollar amount.

It's the fact that Tacoma starting MSRP is only $6000 less than Tundra, and $8000 less than a F250.

    Sorry dude. That's WAY

I'm comparing TODAY'S prices... it has nothing to do with inflation. Inflation has raised the price of Tundra and F250 as well.

I'm talking about TODAY'S price of a mid sized truck compared to TODAY'S price of a 3/4 ton pick up.

That has absolutely nothing what-so-ever to do with inflation.

You have to take the prices back then to today or your argument of it being overpriced isn’t valid. It’s a fact I gave the ranges of msrp to those stated models of the first gen time. There was a 6-8k difference in price between those and a 2004 4x4 TRD Off Road Tacoma in 2004. So what you’re seeing is how inflation works across the board. You just have an emotional attachment to your truck and I can understand that but you just can’t ignore the information shared.

$30,000 in 1999 is the equivalent to roughly $45,000 in 2018 dollars, according to inflation charts.

Don’t let the facts get in the way for people that have already made up their mind!

I’d love a first gen. They’re fantastic looking, run forever, and not terribly uncommon here in Morgantown (surprisingly). I’d never pay $15,000 for one tho. And if I were on the OP’s dealer lot and saw someone get hosed by a dealer trade, I’d laugh heartily. Also hilarious considering all the dealer hate and he talks about smoking people on trades like it’s a benchmark for how good a vehicle is.

Well I guess I'm designating 1st Gen as desert-only build!

I looked at a lot of 1st gens before I bought my 3rd gen and living in SF Bay, most if not all of them had questionable rust...maybe I just got unlucky but I knew that was a problem with 3rd gen 4Runners too (my previous truck)

1st and 2nd gen Tacomas at least are a problem.

Rust is really only a problem for those people who live in certain areas, and even then it doesn't *have* to be a problem. You just have to take some time and care for your vehicle in those harsh conditions.

But all most people do is get in and turn the key and drive, and never look under their vehicle.

    Fun thread.

I haven't seen anyone bring up weight. Mine is for weekend camping and off-road capability. Weight is your enemy on trails. I'm afraid to look what a 2nd or 3rd gen weighs. This has been brought up, but all the sensors and cameras and traction control and unnecessary features and a thousand couple holders. I'm not in love with the brand, even my 1st gen. It just happens to meet my requirements.

I think for a daily driver, I'd prefer a later model truck. But I spent less money of two vehicles than a new truck by having a 2017 Mazda3 I paid 16k for new, which stickered at 23k - and it's a nice car. I'm always at a loss why people try to make one vehicle do it all, unless it's a parking issue.

They actually don't weigh *that much* more than 1st gens. What gets me is the SIZE. The trails I run I scrape both sides of my 1st gen on the manzanita, the later model trucks would get even more tore up.

I'm with you on all the extra gadget crap, it's really unnecessary. Adds complexity, and serves as a crutch for inexperience drivers. Crawl control is a neat idea, but frankly, a steady right foot is superior to what is essentially cruise control for 4-lo. But you add that, and some badging to a regular Tacoma, and people are beating down your door to pay $50k for a TRD Pro. And people make fun of us for paying $12-15k for a 1st gen, lol...

No shit it was loaded into my bed at the dock and unloaded at the boat ramps by my house back in the day. Both were sticks and didn’t have many friends that could drive stick. Had to pay the crane operator at the dock and then some Hawai’i ingenuity got it out at the harbor. The mini was awesome even at 6’1”. One of the few cars I have owned that I miss

I completely understand about the narrowing trails and getting squeezed by mazanita. Then I saw you live not far, and understand.

I came from a 2000 Tundra where both sides were heavily scraped, but it was white. The lighter Tacoma is a game changer off-road. I *think* the Tundra is a thousand pound more, same generation. Could be wrong.

I paid 8k for a '03 with 210k needing 2k of work to get it smogged, etc. This was a year and a half ago.
