Sadly this was in 2006 and didn’t have a camera phone. I really wish I did. And you made me miss that car lol.

I think I paid a hair over $20k for my 2004. But that was in 2005, lol...

I've stopped caring so much about the paint now. The clear coat on my bed is pealing now because I didn't properly prep the paint when I did my bed-liner. Oh well, beater trail truck now... Lots of pinstripes.

So much this. Most people don't realize that the first gens are COMPACT trucks. 2nd/3rd gens are MIDSIZED trucks. To me, the 1st gen vs 2nd/3rd gen comparison is apple's to oranges.

would you pay $5k for a very beat (fixerUpper) weathered one?
that seems to be the low end of the barrel in my locale (from just a few months of observation)

I would just to have a hunt fish trail rig that I don’t care about. You’ve seen first gen prices in my area they are nuts so fuck that.

Why not get a Ford Ranger? Something that hasn't been taken care of is no better than a brand some would consider inferior.

I have a friend who bought an older Ranger for $1000 with $800 worth of new tires. So he bought some tires and gave the guy a $200 tip. It's butt-ass ugly, but who cares when you're out in nature?

Yeah, probably... Might have to take the long way around the Sierras, though.

I've been in the snow plenty of times before. Frames don't spontaneously combust when they touch snow.

And the snow isn't the problem, it's the salt some states use. CA doesn't salt the roads.

I would consider them. I just prefer the Tacoma due to aftermarket support and parts availability. I have had three fords 1978 f100 custom with flare side bed an a 2006 f250 that was awesome an a 1998 ford ranger that died a sudden death cause of black ice. I miss this one the mostE7C57E18-294E-4346-B04B-4B199FC4FB34.jpg

does CA just close the roads or require chains and sand?
I think CO does this but I have recently seen a CO 1st gen not pass frame inspection
    so i dunno!!!

That is a damn nice truck! There's a similar era Scout in my neighborhood I admire. My uncle had one of those early Bronco's with a 302 and super small and compact. Probably heavy though.

I bought Toyota again for the same reasons, after market parts, reputation, customization. But quite honestly I wonder if I couldn't find a cheaper route to the same ends.

Both. It's weather dependent. They do sand the roads, but salt does something fierce to the environment, so it's generally not used here.

Some of the tighter/steeper passes over the Sierras are straight up closed all winter. The big ones, like 50 and 80 usually have chain controls and are heavily plowed, but they have been closed form time to time. It's just too dangerous for some of the other passes, even with chains.

There are plenty of CA trucks that fail the frame inspection, too. It's not a 100% correlation. At least in CA, the spots you get rust are on the coast (salty sea air). It's not that snow and water don't rust the frames, it's that the salty roads are far worse.

    A few.
I’ve been driving in Colorado since ‘94 and I’ve never had to have a vehicle inspection. But I haven’t lived in the Denver metro area since ‘98. Also we use Mag-Chloride (essentially beat juice) instead of salt on the roads. It’s the same thing that they spray on dirt roads to keep the dust down. Nasty stuff that’s hard to wash off, but it’s not as corrosive as salt. There’s also rules about winter rated tires, 4wd, and chains.
